The GDR Oberliga 1961/62 was the 13th edition of the top division of the GDR . The ASK Vorwärts Berlin became champion for the third time , thus defending its title from the previous season. The season began on March 5, 1961 and ended on June 3, 1962.
Before the season
After the game year in football between 1955 and 1960 had been identical to the calendar year, the officials of the DFV decided in 1961 to switch the game rhythm back to the old system (autumn-spring). The spring-autumn rhythm was originally taken over from the Soviet Union, where this rhythm was necessary due to the weather due to the severe winter (and was also practiced in the Russian Premier League until 2011/12 ). However, as the climatic conditions in the GDR were not the same and the rhythm did not match the autumn-spring rhythm of the international European Cup competitions, the decision was finally revised again.
Due to the longer playing time, the league was temporarily played in a triple round: All teams played against each other three times - in their own stadium, in the opponent's stadium and on a neutral pitch. As neutral venues distributed throughout the season (contrary to what one might assume), mainly venues in smaller cities not represented in the first division were chosen.
Season course
Although Vorwärts Berlin secured the championship two game days before the end, the team didn't look as if they could defend their championship title from the previous season. It was only on the 33rd match day that Vorwärts was in first place in the table, but then did not give up this position. Before that, Empor Rostock was at the top of the table for a long time and had successively Dynamo Berlin and Motor Jena as their biggest competition. The Rostockers were also voted Team of the Year due to their good season performance (the team was one of the top four places for the entire season) .
As the best company sports association (BSG), Motor Zwickau again finished fifth in the table. In contrast, things went badly for the second Oberliga BSG Lokomotive Stendal . Lok always occupied a relegation place from the second match day and consequently relegated. Whereby Stendal was able to start a remarkable race to catch up: After being seven points behind relegation in the meantime, they fought their way up to two points against Brieske-Senftenberg . In the second division Lok was accompanied by Einheit Dresden . The long-time member of the league (since 1950) never returned to first-class football.
The SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt was punished with a two-point deduction because a player from the lower-class Chemie Glauchau team was illegally poached.

Others
A total of 2,207,900 spectators saw the 273 league games, which is an average of 8,088 spectators per game. Until then, this was the lowest average number of spectators in the league and was only beaten in 1991. One reason for this may have been the decision to host the third games between two teams on neutral (mostly smaller) places in non-major league cities. The games Rotation Leipzig - Lok Leipzig (October 29, 1961), Empor Rostock - Vorwärts Berlin (15 April 1962), Unity Dresden - Vorwärts Berlin (May 30, 1962) and construction Magdeburg - Lok Stendal (May 30, 1962) had with 35,000 spectators each, the greatest popularity.
851 goals were scored, or 3.12 per game. The highest-scoring encounters were Dynamo Berlin - construction Magdeburg 5: 3 on March 12, 1961 and Lok Leipzig - Turbine Erfurt 5: 3 on August 26, 1961.
FDGB Cup
The FDGB-Pokal was won this season by the Oberliga-Eleventh Chemie Halle. In the final, the championship third was defeated by Dynamo Berlin. Halle had already defeated cup defender Jena in the semifinals.
International competitions
This season brought a first international success for GDR in the European Cup. Cup winners Motor Jena made it to the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners' Cup , where they were eliminated against eventual title winners Atlético Madrid . In the European Cup , Vorwärts Berlin reached a 3-0 first leg against Linfield FC to advance, as Linfield then withdrew. In the first round forward then eliminated against the Glasgow Rangers . The Leipzig city selection made it into the second round of the trade fair city cup , where it was subject to the MTK Budapest . Vorwärts Berlin, Motor Jena, Dynamo Berlin and Lokomotive Leipzig also took part in the first ever International Football Cup .
