The GDR Oberliga 1967/68 was the 19th edition of the top division of the GDR . FC Carl Zeiss Jena became champions for the second time . The season began on August 12, 1967 and ended on June 1, 1968.
Name change
The BSG Motor Zwickau merged on May 1, 1968 with the BSG Aktivist Zwickau to form the BSG Sachsenring Zwickau . Motor continued to play in the Oberliga as the first Sachsenring team, while the activist competed in the GDR league as Sachsenring Zwickau II.
Season course
Although Jena was five points ahead of the champions in the end, the pursuer from Rostock was able to stand up for a long time. On the 22nd matchday came the clash between the two teams, which Rostock won 2-1 and thus created a tie. Of the remaining four games of the season, Hansa only won one and lost three, while Carl Zeiss achieved three wins and one draw in the final sprint. For FC Carl Zeiss Jena, the championship was the prelude to an era in which they always placed in the top five for 16 seasons in a row. The following defeat of Jena in the final of the FDGB Cup against 1. FC Union Berlin was all the more surprising .
For Rostock it was already the fifth runner-up (including the transition round in 1955 ). In addition, there were four second placings in the FDGB Cup , with which Hansa consolidated its reputation as "Eternal Second". They were followed by the newcomers 1. FC Magdeburg, which was also at the beginning of its successful period in the 1970s, the record champions Vorwärts Berlin, Lokomotive Leipzig - for the fifth time in a row among the top five - and last year's surprise champions FC Karl-Marx-Stadt .
The decision about relegation was open for a long time. Before the penultimate matchday, there were only three points difference between the bottom of the table and the eighth of the table. On the last day of the match there was the constellation that the last three teams each had 20 points and two of them, Chemie Leipzig and Dynamo Dresden, met directly. In Dresden, the teams parted in front of 30,000 spectators with a 1-1 draw, which meant that Leipzig remained in the top division due to the better goal difference. The third team, Lokomotive Stendal, could have overtaken both competitors with a win, but lost 4-1 at home against Jena and thus accompanied Dresden into second class. While it was the last season in the league for Stendal, Dresden came back after a year and then dominated GDR football for a decade together with Jena and Magdeburg.

soccer player of the year
After the season, Bernd Bransch was named Footballer of the Year 1968 for the first time by Halleschen FC Chemie . Herbert Pankau (Hansa Rostock) and Roland Ducke (FC Carl Zeiss Jena) followed in second and third place .
FDGB Cup
The FDGB Cup was won this season by the league eighth 1. FC Union Berlin. The Berliners surprisingly defeated the master Carl Zeiss Jena in the final, who missed the chance for the first GDR soccer double . Union had previously beaten the cup defender from Zwickau and the record champions forward.
International competitions
The European Cup season was again unsuccessful for the GDR. Only Lokomotive Leipzig survived the first round in the Messestädte-Pokal . For Karl-Marx-Stadt (in the European Cup against RSC Anderlecht ), Motor Zwickau (in the European Cup against Torpedo Moscow ) and Dynamo Dresden (in the Messestädte-Pokal against the Glasgow Rangers ) it was over after the first opponent. Lok lost to FK Vojvodina Novi Sad in the second round . The Intertoto Cup was also held for the first time in preparation for the season. Lokomotive Leipzig, Carl Zeiss Jena, Dynamo Dresden and Union Berlin took part here, but could not win their group.
