The GDR Oberliga 1952/53 was the fourth edition of the top division of the GDR . The champions were SG Dynamo Dresden , which prevailed 3-2 against BSG Wismut Aue in the playoff for the championship (which became necessary after a tie) . The season began on September 21, 1952 and ended on June 16, 1953.
Before the season
After the league had grown from 14 to 19 teams within two years since it was founded, it was downsized for the first time in the 1952/53 season. With Empor Lauter and Motor Jena there were only two newcomers to the four relegated teams from the previous season , so the league started with 17 teams.
Name changes
During the season the SG Volkspolizei Dresden was renamed SG Dynamo Dresden and SV Vorwärts HVA Leipzig was renamed SV Vorwärts KVP Leipzig and, after moving to Berlin, SV Vorwärts KVP Berlin .
Season course
First, the battle for the championship between BSG Wismut Aue and Lokomotive Stendal took place, which accordingly took the first two places after the first half of the season. However, Stendal could not keep his form and was the second worst team in the second half of the season, only eleventh. It was the other way around with last year's cup winners SG VP Dresden , which was now called Dynamo Dresden after being affiliated with the newly created Dynamo sports association . After a weak first half of the season (they only finished eighth), Dynamo caught up with Bismut in the second half of the season, which in the end led to a tie and a playoff for the championship. Dresden won it 3-2 on July 5, 1953 in front of 40,000 spectators in Berlin's Walter Ulbricht Stadium .
Last year's champion Turbine Halle , on the other hand, had nothing to do with the championship and was only able to save himself from looming relegation on the last match day. The relegated members were Motor Jena , who had been promoted from the previous year, as well as Motor Oberschöneweide , Wismut Gera and SV Vorwärts Leipzig , which had only gained political power two years ago . The descent of the Leipzig could not be prevented by the delegation of many players from the BSG Chemie Leipzig to forward. The team, which then became extremely unpopular in Leipzig, was relocated to Berlin before the end of the season and re-established there as SV Vorwärts KVP Berlin .
With the relegation of Oberschöneweide and forward, the league was again without a team from East Berlin for the following season .

The FDGB Cup was canceled this season. After the first main round was not played until June 7, 1953, nine days before the end of the league season, the second main round was officially postponed due to the summer vacation. Unofficially, the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 was the actual reason for the suspension. The competition continued thereafter during the following season.
