GDR football league 1952/53

The GDR Oberliga 1953/54 was the fifth edition of the top division of the GDR . The BSG Turbine Erfurt became the master . The season began on September 20, 1953 and ended on May 2, 1954.

Before the season

As in the previous season, the number of top division clubs was again reduced by two teams. With 15 teams now, the Oberliga had almost the originally planned capacity of 14 participants again. With the relegation of the two East Berlin teams ( Motor Oberschöneweide and Vorwärts Berlin ) in the preseason, the north-south divide in the top division had worsened even more. Of the 15 top division clubs, Rotation Babelsberg ( Potsdam district ) and Lokomotive Stendal ( Magdeburg district ) were the two northernmost representatives. Not a single league team came from the former state of Mecklenburg . The capital East Berlin was also not represented.

Season course

For the first time, all promoted players were able to assert themselves in the major league. In contrast, with Dessau and Stendal, two founding teams of the league were relegated. Dessau never reached the top division again. For Stendal, the rule had a negative effect that in the event of a tie, the goal quotient decided on the better placement instead of - as in the 1949/50 season - aligning a decider. In the end , Einheit Ost Leipzig had as many points as Stendal, but with 0.754 compared to 0.745, a slightly better goal quotient. In the goal difference, however, Leipzig was worse with -14 goals than Stendal with -13.

Champion was superior Turbine Erfurt after they took the table lead on matchday 15 and then did not give up again. Last year's champion Dynamo Dresden got into shape late and was still third. BSG Wismut Aue , second in the previous season, was promising at the top of the table for a long time, but became weaker in the second half of the season.
