The GDR Oberliga 1950/51 was the second edition of the top division of the GDR . The champions were BSG Chemie Leipzig , which prevailed 2-0 against BSG Turbine Erfurt in the decider for the championship, which was necessary after a tie . The season began on September 3, 1950 and ended on May 6, 1951.
Shortly before the end of the game, there was a major innovation: from April 10, 1951, the goalkeeper and one field player could be replaced. In most countries, including the DFB , substitutions in point and cup games were still ruled out until the late 1960s. In the GDR, which was not yet a member of FIFA , the experiment continued into the following season.
Before the season
The previous year's second SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt was dissolved after the 1949/50 season and connected to the BSG VVB Tabak Dresden . This should start with the former players of SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt in the league. However, after the majority of the former team migrated to Hertha BSC or the FRG , the vacant Oberliga place was awarded to the (initially) relegated ZSG Altenburg after the playoff . The SG Volkspolizei Dresden also came into the upper league.
After East Berlin was named the capital of the GDR and the contract player system was introduced in the West Berlin City League , the German Sports Committee (DS) ranked the three East Berlin teams that had qualified for the city league season 1949/50 ( SG Union Oberschöneweide , VfB Pankow and SC Lichtenberg 47 ) also entered the GDR league, which was increased to 18 teams (including VP Dresden). As a result, many players left their teams to become contract players with West Berlin clubs. The first team from Union Oberschöneweide moved almost completely to West Berlin and founded SC Union 06 Berlin there .
Name changes
The so-called "conversion to production basis" started in 1949 and the associated formation of company sports associations (BSG) were essentially completed by the beginning of the 1950/51 season. Nevertheless, there were further name changes of the sports communities.

Season course
As in the previous season, the battle for the championship ended in a final: Since the two competitors Turbine Erfurt and Chemie Leipzig were tied at the end of the season, the championship had to be played in a playoff. This took place on May 20th in front of 60,000 spectators in the Ernst-Thälmann-Stadion in Chemnitz and was won 2-0 by Chemie. Before that, chemistry and turbine fought a three-way battle for the top of the table with last year's champion Motor Zwickau .
Of the three promoters of the previous season, only Turbine Weimar got down again. Stahl Thale (seventh) and BSG Rotation Dresden (twelfth) placed in the middle of the table. All three newcomers from East Berlin were also relegated to sport. Especially the bottom of the table VfB Pankow set various negative records. Two wins and three draws faced 29 defeats, some of them substantial (once 0: 9, three times 1: 8 and twice 0: 7). The sport-political leadership wanted to keep two Berlin teams in the top division. Therefore the BSG Motor Oberschöneweide and the BSG unit Pankow took over the respective starting places and players of the two teams.
