Gerhard Helbig (born April 13, 1925 ) was a soccer player in Leipzig and East Berlin . With BSG Chemie Leipzig , he was GDR soccer champion in 1951. Later he was appointed Vice President of the GDR Football Association.

In the football season 1948/49, the 23-year-old left winger completed 25 point games for SG Leipzig-Leutzsch in the district class of North West Saxony and scored 15 goals. In March 1948 he moved in the course of the amalgamation of several Leipzig sports associations to ZSG Industrie Leipzig , with which he played all six games for the Saxon football championship. In 1949/50 the ZSG was one of the founding members of the newly introduced upper league of the German Sports Committee , the highest football class in the Soviet occupation zone , later the GDR upper league. During this season, however, Helbig was only used in a cup game in August 1949 and in some friendly games. In the second league season in 1950/51, the Leipziger started under the new name BSG Chemie and at the end became GDR champions. Helbig was used from the 5th matchday on and then played, first as a striker on the right wing, later on the left wing, all point games. In these 31 missions, he scored six goals. He was part of the BSG Chemie squad until the end of 1952 and by then had played a total of 71 league games in which he scored 14 goals. During this time he played both as an attacker on both wings and at times as a center forward.

From October 1952, the police sports association Vorwärts KVP Leipzig began to poach players from BSG Chemie Leipzig to strengthen their own league team. By December 1952, eight chemistry players moved to SV Vorwärts, among them Gerhard Helbig. As early as April 12, 1953, the forward team was moved to East Berlin, where they completed the rest of the season as SV Vorwärts KVP Berlin and then had to relegate to the second-rate GDR league . In these six months, Helbig played nine league games as a left attacker for SV Vorwärts. After a year in the GDR league, Helbig returned to Leipzig in the summer of 1954 and joined the newly founded SC Lokomotive Leipzig . There he was used from January 1955 to the end of the season in seven league point games as a winger and was successful with one goal. In the fall of 1955, a transition round was held to switch to the calendar season, in which Helbig played his last first division game on September 3, 1955. In the game SC Lok - SC Einheit Dresden (3-0) he was substituted on in the 85th minute. At BSG Chemie Leipzig West he let his playing career end in the district class.

After his career as a soccer player, Helbig received his doctorate and was appointed vice president of the GDR soccer association in 1961.
