The GDR Oberliga 1989/90 was the 41st edition of the top division of the GDR and the penultimate season before the league was dissolved in 1991. It began on August 12, 1989 and ended on May 26, 1990. Last year's champion Dynamo Dresden was able to defend its title and thus became champion for the eighth time and thus the last GDR champion.
Season course
The season had an exciting final with a three-way battle both at the top and bottom of the table, plus two direct duels on the last day of the game. Dynamo Dresden, 1. FC Magdeburg and FC Karl-Marx-Stadt fought for the championship on the last match day with 34:16 points each. At the bottom of the table, the teams EFC Stahl, Wismut Aue and progress Bischofswerda, who were also equal on points, fought for the last remaining non-relegation place.
With a 3-1 win against long-time rivals 1. FC Lok Leipzig, Dresden secured first place in the final table and the championship. Karl-Marx-Stadt won a direct duel against Magdeburg 1-0 and came second. In the duel of the promoted Eisenhüttenstadt saved with a 2-0 against Bischofswerda. In addition to the Bischofswerdaern, Wismut Aue also had to relegate - after 1,019 games and 38 seasons of uninterrupted membership in the first division. Also the sensational 4: 1 away win on the last day of the game against the record champions BFC Dynamo, who was looked after by Helmut Jäschke from the start of the season and from January 1990 by Peter Rohde after ten consecutive titles and a runner-up in the previous year after the departure of successful coach Jürgen Bogs Rank 4 came in, could not avert the team's relegation from the Erzgebirge due to the victory of the Stahlstädter.
The season was also shaped by the political changes in the GDR. For the first time, the players had the opportunity to switch to the Bundesliga. The first to use this was the BFC player Andreas Thom , who left the league for Bayer Leverkusen . With the departure of many top performers, which mainly affected the previous top teams, a change in the balance of power began in GDR football. In addition, the associated decrease in the performance level in the major league led to a significant decrease in the number of visitors to the games.
