Steffen Büttner (born November 2, 1963 ) is a former German soccer player.

Athletic career

Büttner joined the offspring of the GDR top club SG Dynamo Dresden in 1977 . In the 1983/84 season he won the Dresden district championship with the SGD second representation at the side of Andreas Diebitz , Dirk Losert and Matthias Schulz and qualified for the second-class league via the promotion round .

In the course of the 1984/85 season he moved for the first time to the top division squad of the Dresden Dynamos. There the defender, who was used by coach Klaus Sammer on the last four match days , was initially in the shadow of experienced players such as Andreas Trautmann , Hans-Jürgen Dörner , Udo Schmuck and Matthias Döschner . At the end of his first season he was already with Dynamo in the final of the FDGB Cup against BFC Dynamo , which the Dresden team won 3-2. In the mid-1980s, Büttner always switched between the Dresden reserve eleven and the first team, with the 1.82-meter-tall defender in 1986/87 with 21 appearances as a permanent member of the league team.

He celebrated his greatest successes in 1989, when Dynamo Dresden was able to win the GDR championship again for the first time in ten years and advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup , where the team was narrowly defeated by VfB Stuttgart . The following year Büttner won his second cup and championship with Dresden . In autumn 1989 he was used in the league as part of a guest license at TSG Meißen .

After playing an international match with the GDR U-21 team in 1985 , he made his debut on March 28, 1990 in the A international match against the USA wearing the GDR national team's jersey . In the following two international matches, national coach Eduard Geyer replaced him in the second half.

The runner-up in the major league in the 1990/91 season brought Dynamo Dresden direct qualification for the 1st Bundesliga . In his first Bundesliga season, Büttner could not get beyond the role of a substitute player. Of his 16 missions, he only played six over the full 90 minutes. In addition to the 121 point games, Büttner was also on the ball in 14 European Cup games and 16 national cup matches for the Black and Yellows.

Finally, in the summer of 1992, he moved to third-class 1. FC Union Berlin , with whom he was twice in a row champion of the middle season in the Oberliga Nordost , but failed to get promoted to the 2. Bundesliga due to the club's lack of economic performance. After Union Berlin had qualified for the newly created regional league in the summer of 1994, Büttner returned to Dresden and joined the fourth-class Dresdner SC in 1995 . After his promotion to the regional league , in which Büttner played 10 games for DSC in 1998/99 , he moved to the district division club FV 06 Dresden-Laubegast for the following year , where he let his career end.
