FDGB Cup 1989/90
In 1989/90 the 39th edition of the men's FDGB Cup was held. It was also the last edition under this title. While the competition was still going on, the name was changed to “Cup of Unions”. In 1991 the " NOFV Cup" was played. 63 teams were eligible to participate: The teams from the GDR Oberliga , the GDR League and the 15 district cup winners from the previous season. The winners were determined in one game, possibly after extra time or by a penalty shoot-out. The final took place for the first time on June 4, 1990 in East Berlin's Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark . The SG Dynamo Dresden prevailed 2-1 against the GDR league representative PSV Schwerin . The Dresdeners managed the double because they were also GDR champions. They were in the FDGB Cup final for the eleventh time in the club's history and won their seventh title. The defeated PSV Schwerin was qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup due to the participation of Dresden in the European Cup of National Champions.

Course of the game
Three years after a second division representative had reached the final with Hansa Rostock, PSV Schwerin was again a team from the GDR league in the cup final. Just a few weeks earlier, the Mecklenburgers had transformed from SG Dynamo into the police sports club. As the 14th in the GDR league, you were a blatant outsider and, with Frank Prange, you had only one player with top division experience (BFC Dynamo) in your ranks. With Andreas Reinke, Matthias Stammann and Steffen Baumgart, however, there were promising talents in the team who later made a career in the Bundesliga. Dresden coach Häfner had to do without two regular defenders, Andreas Trautmann and Matthias Maucksch , and took the risk of employing the inexperienced 20-year-old Frank Schulze as goalkeeper.
The PSV approached the game against the newly crowned champions without hesitation, as they had already secured participation in the competition for the European Cup Winners' Cup. After just five minutes he caused a bang when his midfielder Stammann rounded three Dresdeners in the slalom, served his secondary player Kort with a precise cross and this shot the Schwerin in the lead with direct storage. Then Schwerin's goalkeeper Reinke was at the center of the action, who defused the angry counterattacks of the Dresdeners with spectacular parades. He only had to admit defeat after almost a quarter of an hour when he was overcome by Stübner's skilful direct shot. However, the equalizing goal did not bring a turn in the game. Dresden acted too nervously and hectically, and on the other hand the defense organized by Beutling was secure. Dynamo strikers Gütschow and Kirsten were well shielded.
Six minutes after the half-time break, Dresden suffered another shock. After a punch against the Schwerin Stammann, director Pilz was sent off after the linesman Weise pointed out. Although the Schwerin in numbers were able to keep the game open, they lacked the playful means to successfully implement their numerical superiority. With his substitutions of the fresh strikers Benthin (66th minute) and Buchsteiner (75th), coach Radtke tried to strengthen the offensive again. However, the winning goal was scored by Dresden's Kirsten, who was able to successfully complete a double with Sammer five minutes before the end. It was a tribute to PSV Schwerin that he did not give up afterwards and caused a lot of excitement in the Dresden penalty area until the final whistle, but he could not turn the game around.
