FDGB Cup 1964/65
For the 14th time in the season was 1964/65 the FDGB Cup football competition held.
At the preliminary round on August 2, 1964, the 32 teams of the second-rate GDR league from the 1963/64 season and 28 finalists of the district cup competitions were represented. Empor Neustrelitz and Vorwärts Neubrandenburg were both GDR league players and district cup finalists. The 14 teams from the Oberliga , the highest GDR soccer class, intervened in the second main round on November 1, 1964. Motor Steinach , Dynamo Dresden and Dynamo Berlin have already retired here. In the round of 16 there was no longer a district representative, with the exception of Chemie Halle , the remaining GDR league players Vorwärts Cottbus , Vorwärts Neubrandenburg and Motor Dessau were all eliminated. Dessau forced a replay in the league duel against Chemie Halle, which was then lost 3-0.
While last year's cup finalist SC Leipzig already lost to SC Motor Jena in the quarter-finals , the defender Aufbau Magdeburg reached the final again. Two quarter-finals were only decided after extra time. GDR league team Chemie Halle wrestled Motor Zwickau's top division team from a repeat game in the quarterfinals and surprisingly won 2-0 in Zwickau. Only in the semifinals was the high-altitude flight in Halle stopped by Motor Jena.

Course of the game
In the 14th cup final, the cup defender and current table seventh 1. FC Magdeburg and the current table runner-up FC Carl Zeiss Jena faced each other. Due to the course of the championship, the experts saw the Jena as the favorite. Both teams refuted this prognosis right from the start. While the Magdeburg team immediately took the initiative and sparked a real storm, the Thuringians did not manage to enforce their usual combination game. Visibly impressed by the Magdeburg offensive, Jena pulled back a long way, looked nervous and hesitant, and bad passes increased. On the other hand, Magdeburg had chances to score in abundance, Klingbiel and above all the lively Walter brought Jena's defense time and time again into great distress. But everything was still too hasty, and nervousness also prevailed in the Magdeburg ranks. After no goal had been scored by the break, the cup defenders took over the game again at the beginning of the second half of the game. Every minute, Stöcker had the best chances to score, but a goal did not want to fall. Then in the 65th the completely surprising goal of the Jena: Zapf played long and was able to hit a cross into the Magdeburg penalty area. Müller stormed up on the left and hit the ball with a direct shot into the far corner. Magdeburg's coach Kümmel reacted immediately, sending his right defender Wiedemann into the storm instead of the exhausted Hirschmann and encouraging his team to continue to attack. On the other hand, the Jena tried to bring their leadership over time, let themselves be pushed further on the defensive. In the end, Magdeburg's initiative was rewarded, albeit with two controversial goals: In the 82nd minute, Magdeburg's Walter took advantage of a misunderstanding between Jena defender Stricksner and his goalkeeper Fritzsche and scored the equalizer with his head. Most experts saw this as an offside position. In the last minute of the game, Marx from Jena failed a defensive action in the penalty area, instead of the ball he hit the knee of Magdeburg striker Stöcker. Hirschmann converted the penalty with a low shot. The Jenaer complained in vain that Marx had played the ball. While Magdeburg celebrated their surprising victory and successful title defense, Jena quarreled with the referee and their own unsatisfactory performance. The DFV vice-president Günter Schneider concluded: “I am disappointed with this game. The people of Jena can do a lot more. Magdeburg has to be respected for morale. All in all, it was unfortunately not an advertisement for football. ”(Deutsches Sportecho 10 May 1965)
