The football section of SC Potsdam existed between 1961 and 1966. It was then incorporated into BSG Motor Babelsberg .

development

The SC Potsdam was founded on January 1, 1961 as part of the development of the East German sport in view of the Olympic Games in 1964 and the 1968th The focus was initially on the football section, whose teams were the first to contest competitions. She took over the 1st team of the BSG Rotation Babelsberg and took their place in the second-rate GDR league . The team was strengthened by goalkeeper Gerhard Rössel from SC Turbine Erfurt , defender Hans Pollaene from SC Aufbau Magdeburg and junior national player Rainer Geserich from BSG Rotation.

In its first season 1961/62 the SC Potsdam reached fourth place in the GDR league, which meant a significant improvement over the last result of the BSG rotation by six places. In the cup competition, the Potsdam team failed only in the quarter-finals after a 2-0 defeat at the league club and later cup winner SC Chemie Halle . In the following three seasons without any strong newcomers, the performance of the soccer team stagnated, the tendency was visibly decreasing with places 5, 8 and 9. In the cup, too, the performance deteriorated from season to season. While the player base remained relatively constant with 17 players in four seasons, there were numerous changes in the coaching position. In each of the first two seasons there was a team of three, to which the ex-national player and record shooter of the GDR Oberliga Johannes Schöne belonged twice . He jumped in again in 1964 after the previous coach Werner Tonke had been dismissed. Most recently, the former Gau and Oberliga player Gerhard Richter trained the Potsdam team.

When SC Potsdam had finished eighth place in the first half of the GDR league in 1965/66, the hope was given up that the soccer section could develop into a top performer in GDR soccer. On January 8, 1966, the sports club footballers moved to BSG Motor Babelsberg. This had previously played in the fifth-rate district class, but took the place of SC Potsdam in the GDR league in the second half of the 1965/66 season. By the end of the season, BSG Motor fell back to eleventh place.
