Klaus Benkert (born June 20, 1938 ) is a former German football player who was active in the 1950s for Rotation Babelsberg and Einheit Dresden in the GDR Oberliga , the top division of GDR football .

Athletic career

As a 14-year-old, Klaus Benkert began playing organized football at Rotation Babelsberg in 1952. In 1956 he was GDR champion with the Babelsberg junior team. In the summer of 1957 (calendar year season) he came to three point games as a striker in the league team of Rotation Babelsberg. In the 1958 season, Benkert played for the upper division unit Dresden, where he played 13 upper division games as a right winger and scored three goals. Although Rotation Babelsberg was relegated from the league in 1958, Benkert returned there in 1959. By 1960 he completed 49 of 52 league games there in the GDR league and scored eight goals. At the beginning of the 1961/62 season (return to the summer-spring season) the GDR league team was transferred from Rotation Babelsberg to the newly founded SC Potsdam, which took over the GDR league space. The football section of SC Potsdam existed until the end of 1965. In the three and a half seasons with a total of 110 GDR league game days, Benkert was the record player for Potsdam with 135 appearances. He got 15 goals. After the football game operations at SC Potsdam were stopped, their players were assigned to the previous regional league team Motor Babelsberg, who took over the GDR league space of the sports club. Motor Babelsberg played in the GDR league until 1967/68, and Benkert was again a record player during this time. Of the 75 point games, he only missed one game. He was one of the goalscorers every season and had a total of ten goals. Then Benkert played one more season with the Babelsbergers in the third-rate district league and then ended his career as a footballer at the age of 32. He remained in Babelsberg football as a youth coach until retirement age.
