Athletic career

1952-1956

Woitzat grew up in Lindig near Kahla in East Thuringia . Until 1952 he played in the company sports club (BSG) Chemie Kahla in the fourth class district class of Thuringia. At the beginning of the 1952/53 season he moved to the league promoted BSG Motor Jena. The 19-year-old had a regular place in the league team from the 8th match day, where he was used variably between left winger, half left and center forward. Of the 32 league games of the season, Woitzat played 27 games and scored four goals. The newcomer Jena could not assert itself in the league and rose after a year in the GDR league . The Jenaers spent three seasons there until they were promoted to the league again in 1956. In the meantime, the company sports association had become the Motor Jena sports club in 1954. In these three seasons with a total of 78 rounds, Woitzat had played 72 games and scored ten goals. In the transition round in 1955, which was necessary to align with the calendar game year from 1956, he had completed all 13 games. While he had been used as a striker until 1955, coach Warg then put him in midfield as a left runner . Woitzat kept the position for many years, even among various coaches.

1957-1962

In his second league season in 1957 Woitzat could only play 16 point games due to injury. Subsequently, however, he was part of the player base in every season until 1964 and always played the majority of the point games played. From 1959 to 1965 he was the captain of the league team. On October 7, 1960, the team with SC Motor Jena was in the final of the GDR soccer cup . With Woitzat as the left runner, the Jena won the cup with a 3-2 win after extra time over SC Empor Rostock. In the 1961/62 season, when GDR football had meanwhile introduced the summer-spring schedule, the 28-year-old Woitzat was ordered into the defense by coach Georg Buschner , where he was deployed on the left until the end of his senior league career .

In this position Woitzat also played his only international match with the GDR national team. He had been appointed to the national team in the fall of 1961, and coach Károly Sós put the 28-year-old on October 22, 1961 in the friendly between Poland and GDR (3-1) instead of the injured standard defender Hans-Dieter Krampe .

1962-1969

In 1962/63 Woitzat contributed 20 stakes to the first Jena GDR championship. At the age of 31, he played his last league season in 1964/65. After he had completed the first three point games, the 20th matchday was his last league game. In the match between SC Karl-Marx-Stadt and SC Motor Jena (1-0) on April 11, 1965, he played as a right runner for the last time in the league. He played his last competitive game for the league team on May 8, 1965 in the cup final against SC Aufbau Magdeburg as a left defender. The Jena lost the final with 1: 2.

Within nine seasons Woitzat had played 193 league games and scored nine goals. In the GDR Cup he was used in 27 games (1 goal) and in the European Cup he played five times. In the 1961/62 European Cup Winners' Cup , he reached the semi-finals with Jena. There he played in the second leg against Atlético Madrid (0-4). Until 1969 Woitzat was still active in the second team of Jena, which had changed to FC Carl Zeiss Jena in 1966. In 1967 he won promotion to the GDR league with Jena II. In 1997, FC Carl Zeiss made him an honorary member of the club.
