Kurt Leitner (born March 21, 1946 in Schwarzach im Pongau , State of Salzburg ; † October 7, 2018 ) was an Austrian football player in the position of a striker .

Career

Leitner began his career as a center forward with his hometown club SV Schwarzach . Already in the youth team of Pongauer he fell to the scouts because of his beidbeinigen shooting power and his speed. At the age of 20, the talented center forward moved to the first division Wiener Sport-Club in 1966 and matured into a much sought-after top striker at the Dornbach team in the following two years. A "highlight" were his two hits on October 1, 1966 in the "sensational" 3-0 victory of the amateur national team in Salzburg-Itzling against England, which meant winning the group and taking part in the final round at the end of June 1967 in Palma , where Austria won the title. - In 1968 he moved to the Upper Austrian capital Linz and played successfully at LASK for the next six years .

During this time Leitner was called up to the Austrian national team several times . In fact, it was only used once by the team bosses Erwin Alge and Johann Pesser , on April 4, 1971, when Austria lost 2-0 to Hungary in Vienna . As a strike partner of Willi Kreuz and Geza Gallos , he had a great chance in the fifth minute of the game, but his shot went just over the bar. In the 35th minute, after a pass from Buffy Ettmayer , he played ideally for Gallos, who shot the ball dry into the goal. However, the Swiss referee Pius Kamber did not recognize the goal because of alleged offside . After 77 minutes Leitner was replaced by Karl Kodat from Vienna, who worked for Austria Salzburg , ending his short team career.

After a planned transfer to the Austrian record champions Rapid Wien in 1974 was broken after a serious injury, he moved to Wiener Austria in the spring of 1975 to replace the center forward Helmut Köglberger who had returned to Linz . With the violets from the federal capital he came to 12 missions and one goal in the spring round. In his last Bundesliga season in 1975/76 he developed into an indispensable team support and celebrated his greatest success by winning the title of Wiener Austria, to which he contributed six goals in 21 appearances.

After leaving Austria, he played in the 2nd division at FC Dornbirn in 1913 before ending his career in the lower leagues. As a coach , Leitner looked after Vienna from the end of 1979 to the spring of 1980 and then some lower-class teams, but later concentrated on his main job as an insurance employee.

Kurt Leitner died in October 2018 at the age of 72.
