SV Kahla was founded in 1910. In the twenties the club operated in the Gauliga Ostthüringen , but could not achieve any notable successes until 1945.

After the Second World War, SV was dissolved in 1910 and re-established as SG Rot-Weiß Kahla . Already in 1948 the name was briefly changed to BSG Keramik Kahla . Since 1950 the Thuringians played under the name Chemie Kahla . At the sporting level, Kahla quickly passed through the district class and the district league Gera in the early 1950s . In the 1953/54 season, Chemie was promoted to the GDR league . The Thuringians had to leave the second highest division of the GDR after only one season as the bottom of the season 2 table. In the following years Kahla played exclusively in the regional area of the Gera district .

After reunification , the club returned to its historical name. In the very first final of the 1991 TFV Cup , Kahla won the Thuringian State Cup against FV Zeulenroda . In 1992, the East Thuringian won the championship in the district league and rose to the Thuringian league . After two previous runners-up in the Thuringian League , in 1996 the promotion to the Oberliga Nordost took place . After two seasons, SV Kahla had to relegate from the Oberliga together with Anhalt Dessau and Halleschen FC . After the league reform in Thuringian football for the 2010/11 season, the club played in the eight-class regional class (season 2). In 2012, the regional classes were transferred from the TFV's area of responsibility to those of the newly established 9 district technical committees. Until 2017 the club plays in the regional class Thuringia East (7th league).

After the 2016/17 season, most of the football department was spun off from the club to BSG Chemie Kahla . The other players stayed with SV 1910 Kahla .
