The Football Oberliga Nordost 1997/98 was the seventh season of the Football Oberliga Nordost and the fourth as the fourth highest division in Germany. The two season winners of the north and south seasons rose directly to the Regionalliga Nordost .
The three bottom of the table of the two seasons were relegated directly to the national or association leagues. At the end of the season it was decided that the two table thirteenth had to be relegated to the respective association leagues.
North season
The SD Croatia Berlin could move up to the season after a convincing performance with twelve points ahead of second-placed League Qual secure. The FSV 90 Velten withdrew from the game after the start of the season and was the first to be relegated. The Parchimer FC in 1992 and the SG Bornim also rose directly from the Association leagues. FSV Optik Rathenow and Türkiyemspor Berlin qualified as twelfth and thirteenth respectively for the games to stay in the major league against their respective counterparts in the south season.

Season south
After SV Fortuna Magdeburg had been at the top of the table uninterruptedly since the 8th matchday, the Dresdner SC was able to secure the lead in the table on the penultimate matchday and was in the end, with two points ahead of Magdeburg, champions of the season south. The FC Anhalt Dessau stood since the opening day throughout the relegation zone and eventually finished last. That is why the Dessau team, like SV 1910 Kahla and FV Zeulenroda, had to relegate to the Association and State League. The Halle FC and SV JENAer glass plant qualified for the Games in order to remain in the league, against the appropriately placed teams in the North-season.

Relegation matches
At the end of the league season it was not yet clear how many NOFV teams would be relegated from the regional league. In order to determine the order of the additional league relegated teams, the twelfth and thirteenth of the two seasons played two games against each other to stay in the league.

In the two twelfth teams, the two teams each won their home game. The first leg in Rathenow ended 3-0, the second leg in Jena finally 1: 2.

Both games of the table thirteenth ended in a draw. In the first leg in Berlin, Türkiyemspor Berlin and Hallesche FC parted with a 1-1 draw. The second leg in Halle, however, ended goalless.

In the end, however, the games were meaningless because the number of relegated regional leagues meant that both thirteenth had to be relegated, but both twelfth remained in the major league. Only with an uneven number of relegated league players would the games have tipped the scales for staying or relegating.
