The 1991/92 season of the Football Oberliga Nordost was the first season of the Oberliga Nordost as the third highest division in the Federal Republic of Germany . The German reunification took place only during the preseason , so that the 1990/91 season had meant the last staging of the former GDR league , which was also a qualification for the all-German league system. While two teams from the GDR Oberliga were integrated into the Bundesliga and six more into the 2nd Bundesliga , the remaining clubs in the former GDR Oberliga together with clubs from the GDR League , which was also held for the last time in 1990/91 , formed the promoters from the subordinate leagues as well as other participants from the also discontinued amateur Oberliga Berlin, the new Oberliga Nordost as one of the eight upper leagues in Germany.
The Oberliga Nordost was initially played in the three seasons north, middle and south, with the south season comprising the clubs from Saxony and Thuringia and SV Merseburg 99 from Saxony-Anhalt . The north squadron, on the other hand, included the clubs from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the middle season the other clubs from Saxony-Anhalt, while clubs from Berlin and Brandenburg were distributed over the north and middle seasons. The respective season champions played at the end of the season in the relegation round for promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga , which ultimately was not achieved by any club from the Oberliga Nordost. In order to reduce the series of between 18 and 20 teams as planned to 16 teams each, a total of 14 teams with only six promoted teams were relegated to the association and national leagues. Because of three relegated teams from the 2nd Bundesliga, the following season 1992/93 was played with 17 teams per season.
North season
In the north season, the record champions of the former GDR, now renamed FC Berlin , won the season, while the two other GDR top division clubs from the previous year, Eisenhüttenstädter FC and Viktoria Frankfurt , only finished sixth and eleventh respectively. Tennis Borussia Berlin reached fourth place in the final table and was thus the best-placed representative of the former Berlin city league this season. In addition to the last two teams, Hafen Rostock and Blau-Weiß Parchim , the Berlin clubs Wacker 04 Berlin and BFC Preussen relegated to the subordinate leagues, while the club Rot-Weiß Prenzlau , which was actually relegated from a sporting point of view, benefited from financial bottlenecks at the Stahl Hennigsdorf club and instead of Hennigsdorf remained in the league. In addition, at the end of the season, the FSV Velten 1990 was regrouped from the middle season to the north season.
