Since no club from the Thuringian league had reported for the Oberliga 2017/18 and the required strength of 32 clubs was not achieved by reducing the number of relegated clubs from the Oberliga at the end of the 2016/17 season, it increased according to a supplement decided by the NOFV the promotion and relegation regulation the number of promoters from the regional associations at the end of the 2016/17 season. According to this regulation, the Saxon Football Association, the state association of the NOFV with the largest number of senior members, received another promotion place, which allowed SV Einheit Kamenz to take part in the Oberliga 2017/18 as the runner-up in the Sachsenliga. On June 26, 2017, the NOFV announced in the course of the relay division that 1. FC Frankfurt would remain in the Oberliga and the increase in the Oberliga North season to 17 teams.

Relegation
The relegation games , which were initially planned between the thirteenth of both league seasons, were played by the Charlottenburg FC Hertha 06 from the north and SV Kamenz from the south. While the Charlottenburg FC Hertha 06 qualified for the relegation as thirteenth of the North relay, first FSV Barleben as thirteenth and then SV Schott Jena as fourteenth did not participate, so that SV Einheit Kamenz as fifteenth of the South relay was eligible to participate. The overall result from the first and second leg decided who would stay in the Oberliga Nordost 2018/19 . In the first leg, the Charlottenburg FC Hertha 06 achieved a 3-1 away win. In the second leg, however, the SV unit Kamenz achieved a 2-1 away win. Charlottenburg won 4: 3 in the addition of the return match result and managed to stay in the Oberliga Nordost, while Kamenz was relegated to the Sachsenliga after only one season in the league.
