History and sporting career

After the 1973/74 season of the second -rate GDR league , the army sports association Vorwärts decided to move the previous league representative Vorwärts Leipzig to Dessau. As a result, the Army Sports Association (ASG) Vorwärts Dessau was founded on September 4, 1974. At the beginning of the 1974/75 season she took over the GDR league space of the Leipziger. The Dessau army team played continuously in the GDR league from 1974 to 1991 and replaced local rivals Motor Dessau as the city's leading football team for many years. Vorwärts played in the upper third of the table for the entire period of GDR league membership and had an astonishingly high average attendance for an army sports community.

In 1976 and 1984 the Dessau team took part as the relay winner of the GDR league in the promotion round to the top soccer class of the GDR league , but failed to qualify on both occasions. In the promotion round of the 1975/76 season, Dessau only finished last behind the later promoters Hansa Rostock and 1. FC Union Berlin , as well as Motor Werdau and Motor Suhl and only narrowly failed in the promotion round in 1984 behind Stahl Brandenburg in third place.

In the GDR Cup competition ( FDGB Cup ) 1975/76, the forward team advanced to the quarterfinals. After victories over MAB Schkeuditz (2: 0), Lokomotive Ost Leipzig (7: 1), Lokomotive Cottbus (7: 2) and the league club Chemie Leipzig (1: 0, 1: 2), she met second place in the Oberliga Dynamo Dresden . This time the Dessau team had no chance in either game and were clearly defeated 0: 3 and 1: 4. Forward coach Werner Eilitz offered the following teams in the two encounters :

FC Anhalt Dessau (1990-2005)

In the summer of 1989 the sports location Vorwärts Dessau was dissolved and the sports sections were transferred to the civil sports community Dessau 89. On June 20, 1990, the SG's general assembly decided to rename the club the Anhalt Dessau football club. From a sporting point of view, Dessau played in the Oberliga Nordost until 1998, and in 1992 FC Anhalt won the district cup. In 1992, 1994 and 1999 the Dessau team reached the final of the state cup, but had to bow to higher-class teams. The relegation of 1998 to the Association League Saxony-Anhalt , due to numerous player departures, could be compensated by the immediate promotion, even after relegation in the 2000/01 season, the immediate promotion succeeded.

In the following years the financial conditions worsened dramatically, in December 2003 bankruptcy had to be filed, the club did not appear in the second half of the current season. After the club was dissolved, SV Stahlbau Dessau took over its football team and initially let them play as the second team in the 2004/05 season. Their successful appearance led to a change of squad during the winter break, so that the former FC-Anhalt players ended the season as SV Stahlbau I and were promoted to the 1st district class.

Forward Dessau (since 2005)

Despite this success, there were disagreements within SV Stahlbau, so that a large number of football players founded their own club on April 12, 2005, which they named "ASG Vorwärts Dessau". However, the name ASG no longer stands for “Army Sports Community”, but for “Anhaltische Sportgemeinschaft”. By renouncing SV Anhalt to play in the 1st district class, the ASG was able to take over their league place. In the first 2005/06 season Vorwärts Dessau was promoted to the district league. In the 2008/09 season, the ASG Vorwärts Dessau was district champion and thus rose to the national class. In 2013, he was relegated to the regional league again.
