Henry Lesser (born May 8, 1963 in Bad Liebenstein ) is a former soccer player in the GDR soccer team . In the top division of the GDR football association , the Oberliga , he played for BSG Motor Suhl and FC Carl Zeiss Jena . Lesser is a four-time GDR national player.
Athletic career
Beginnings and BSG Motor Suhl
Lesser comes from a ski jumping family and also turned to ski jumping as a student, but ended his involvement in this sport after serious falls. Only later did he switch to football at the company sports association (BSG) Stahl Brotterode. In November 1982 he was drafted into the army service, for which he had committed himself for three years through his desire to study, but during this time he was able to play football in the second-rate GDR league for the army sports community Vorwärts Dessau . According to his own statements, he was also delegated by Dessau to the priority club of the Vorwärts army sports association , FC Vorwärts Frankfurt / Oder , but only trained there without being involved.
From September 1984 he played for the league promoted Motor Suhl. The 1.78 meter tall striker was used for the first time in the match between Wismut Aue and Motor Suhl (2-0) on the 4th Bundesliga matchday. He then played all of Suhl's point games except for the last matchday and usually played center forward. In these 22 top division games, he scored four goals and was the top scorer of the motor team. This could not hold the league and rose again after a year in the GDR league.
FC Carl Zeiss Jena
Lesser then left Suhl and joined the upper division club FC Carl Zeiss Jena. There the sports student was used in the league from the 1st matchday of the 1985/86 season, had a regular place as a winger from the 8th matchday on and played all 26 point games. In early 1986 Lesser was included in the squad of the GDR national team. On February 14, 1986, he played his first international match in the test match Mexico - GDR (1: 2), he was substituted on in the 80th minute for right winger Ulf Kirsten . By April 1986, he was used in three other international matches, where he was only in the game Brazil - GDR (3-0) in the starting line-up, but only played there for 65 minutes. In the 1986/87 season he fell out of the first twelve league games, so that he only made 14 league appearances this season. In the following season he was only regularly on the 10th matchday in the top division team of FC Carl Zeiss, still as a winger. On June 4, 1988, he was the right attacker with FC Carl Zeiss in the final of the GDR soccer cup , but the Jena lost the game against BFC Dynamo 2-0 in extra time. After Lesser had started the 1988/89 season only as a substitute, coach Lothar Kurbjuweit put him in the defense at the beginning of the second half of the season, where Lesser usually played all second round point games as a right defender. During the 1989/90 season, Lesser's end of career was already indicated, he was only used eleven times in the major league, in the second half of the season he played only two matches as a substitute. On September 1, 1990 Lesser completed one last competitive game for the league team of FC Carl Zeiss Jena. In the game of the 3rd match day 1. FC Magdeburg - FC Carl Zeiss (4: 3) he played as a left winger for the last time for 65 minutes in the Jena team. It was his 134th competitive game for FC Carl Zeiss, including 96 league games with six goals, twelve national cup games (two goals) and four goalless European cup games.
Further sporting career
For the 1991/92 season Lesser moved to Borussia Fulda in the third-class Oberliga Hessen . He ended his career with the Hessian clubs TSV Künzell, SG Bad Soden and Germania Fulda . From 2000 to April 2008, Lesser, who had already acquired his sports teacher diploma during his time in Jena, worked as a trainer at Borussia Fulda. With the beginning of the 2010/11 season he took over the training of SV Neuhof 1910 in the seventh-class group league Fulda, where he was released on May 21, 2012. From the 2012/13 season Lesser worked as a coach for the sixth-class Fulda association league club TSV Lehnerz . In its first year as coach, the club achieved its first promotion to the fifth-class Hessenliga . On October 24, 2017 he was again coach of the Hessen league team Borussia Fulda. In 2019 the business economist led a life without a double burden for the first time in a quarter of a century after retiring from the coaching job.
