Zeulenroda is a district of Zeulenroda-Triebes in the Greiz district in Thuringia . The town, which was independent until 2006, was the district seat of the district of the same name from 1952 to 1994 . On February 1, 2006, the city of Triebes was incorporated into the city of Zeulenroda. In the course of this city merger, the name was changed to Zeulenroda-Triebes . Because of its geographical location, Zeulenroda is also called the city on the heights .

location

Zeulenroda is located in the southeast of Thuringia, not far from the border with the Free State of Saxony in the Thuringian Slate Mountains . To the south lies the Pöllwitzer Wald and to the west the Zeulenroda dam . The local soils have a high proportion of fine earth and a high humus content . They are yield stable under the climatic conditions. In the Zeulenroda area there are diabase rocks, phyllite , quartzite and clay slate ( alum slate ). The federal road 94 and the state roads 1083, 1087, 2348 and 2349 connect the district with traffic.

history

On August 14, 1325, the village of Zeulenroda, founded by the bailiffs von Weida , was first mentioned as Zu Ulenrode . In 1438 Zeulenroda was granted city rights. Thanks to its convenient location at the intersection of the streets Weida - Hof and Triptis - Elsterberg , the settlement developed into a lively market town. From here the traffic from Bohemia and Franconia continued northwards. In 1500 the city was pledged to the lords of the Reuss Princely House (Plauen Line) . With the loss of the hinterland, the city's citizens became impoverished. In 1564 the Reussian area was divided into a younger , middle and older line , to which Zeulenroda belonged. City fires in 1566, 1706, 1790 and 1818 caused great damage. The first commercial operations were the Obere Hardt or Steinmühle and the Untere Hardt or Görlersmühle . The first mentioned mill was mentioned for the first time in 1527 when the building application for the location on the Triebes was submitted. The second-mentioned mill probably existed between 1562 and 1591, because during this period Ulrich Schröter was named as miller. In 1948 the last miller left. With his departure, the trade went out.

Around 1750 Zeulenroda developed into a stronghold of stocking knitting and achieved world fame well into the 19th century. In addition, the carpentry trade as well as the rubber knitwear and knitwear production gained in importance. According to the designs of the factory owner Christian Heinrich Schopper, today's town hall was built in the classical style from 1825 to 1827 , into which the Sparkasse Zeulenroda, founded in 1851, moved in 1880 . In 1883 the Werdau – Weida – Mehltheuer railway line through Zeulenroda was inaugurated by the Mehltheuer-Weidaer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft. The city only got a direct connection with the railway line Zeulenroda und Bf - Zeulenroda ob Bf, which opened in 1914 .

In the city council elections of December 4, 1932, the NSDAP , which had run for the first time, won 9 out of 25 seats. Numerous resettlers came to the city during and after the Second World War . The high-frequency laboratory of the Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt under its director Adolf Scheibe had been relocated to Zeulenroda when the area bombing began on Berlin . In an attack by the US Air Force on Zeulenroda on March 17, 1945, eight people were killed. Overall, Zeulenroda was largely spared from the war. The US Army occupied the city on April 16, 1945 without fighting. From July 1, 1945, the city was under Soviet administration . When the Americans withdrew from Thuringia, they evacuated the high-frequency laboratory, along with its employees and their families, to Heidelberg .

After the founding of the GDR , Zeulenroda became the district town of the Zeulenroda district in the Gera district in the course of the district reforms in the GDR .

On August 13, 1973, the front part of the dam bridge to Auma that was under construction collapsed . Four people died and five were seriously injured. The work (for the first time a bridge in a free porch) took place under deadline pressure and under pressure to save steel. Since this event took place on the anniversary of the construction of the wall, sabotage was initially suspected. The chief engineer and two employees were sentenced to several years in prison by the Gera District Court in May 1974, but were then acquitted by the GDR Supreme Court. In the course of the investigation it was found that outdated design specifications were the cause of the collapse. On June 20, 1975, the new drinking water dam on the Weida was officially handed over.

On October 19, 1989, a political demonstration against the SED dictatorship took place in Zeulenroda for the first time . About 3,000 people took part in it. The SED district leadership resigned on November 13th. In the first free local elections that took place on May 6, 1990, Frank Steinwachs ( CDU ) was elected mayor of Zeulenroda. The state- owned enterprises were privatized, and unemployment rose dramatically. VEB WEMA (machine tool construction), Möbelkombinat, Rotpunkt (rubber goods) and Elastic Mieder (lingerie), which were based in the GDR era, were gradually dissolved as a result of the fall of the Berlin Wall . new companies, including Bauerfeind AG, settled on new commercial sites.

In 1994, Zeulenroda lost its district town status through the district reform . A slightly declining population development and the possible loss of Zeulenroda status as a medium-sized center led to the merger with the neighboring town of Triebes on February 1, 2006, which was supported by the Free State of Thuringia with a one-time donation of 1 million euros.

Population development of Zeulenroda

In 1908 the population of Zeulenroda reached the 10,000 mark. In 1946 the city had grown to over 14,000 inhabitants due to many resettlers. At the beginning of the 1990s, over 15,000 people lived in Zeulenroda. The number of residents has decreased slightly in recent years.

Carp piper legend

According to a legend, Zeulenrodaers once had to help the princely lords in Greiz to fish the castle pond. As a reward, they were invited to an evening carp dinner. But since the Greiz carp tasted of mud because of the polluted ponds and the Zeulenrodaers, who were known for their good carp from their own ponds, did not eat them, one of them vented his displeasure. He got up and shouted: “We don't give a damn about your carp!” Since that day the citizens of Zeulenroda have been nicknamed “Karpfenpfeifer”.

In 1966 the wooden freighter Zeulenroda was launched in the Rostock VEB shipyard Neptun . The ship of the GDR merchant fleet went primarily to the ports of the White Sea . After the end of the GDR, the ship was sold abroad and renamed. In 2009 it was scrapped in Calcutta after various changes of ownership under the name of Captain Ali .
