coat of arms

Blazon : Split; in front in silver over a lowered blue wavy bar a blue, four-spoke mill wheel; behind in red a fallen silver sword, on the left side in the middle accompanied by a silver chalice.

Merkendorf and the district of Piesigitz have a common coat of arms. The right half of the coat of arms shows a mill wheel and a stream and symbolizes the three water mills of the place. The stream is the Trübebach, which flows below the village into the current Weidatalsperre. The left half shows a blade and a chalice, symbols of St. Barbara, patron saint of Piesigitz below Merkendorf.

Culture

A village festival of regional importance is the international scalding trough race , which has taken place every two years in summer since 1989 , in which scalding troughs have to be used to negotiate a route across the four village ponds.
