Merkendorf is a district of the municipality of Memmelsdorf in the Bamberg district with 885 inhabitants.

history

"Crucifixion Group" and war memorial

The place was mentioned for the first time in 1162. A cathedral canon handed over Merkendorf to the diocese of Bamberg . The place was previously called Mirckendorf or Merckhendorf .

A canon of the Bamberg cathedral chapter had the authority of bailiff as a lead lord .

The condition of the fiefdom deteriorated dramatically after the Thirty Years War . After the secularization , the fief could be acquired as property. Merkendorf counted 52 houses at the time. Three fell to the municipality of Memmelsdorf, six to the later Bamberg Citizens Hospital and the remainder could be leased to the royal Rentamt Hallstadt .

The voluntary fire brigade , which still exists today, was launched in 1874 and the schoolhouse was named literally in October 1817.

Merkendorf was captured by American troops in early April 1945 during World War II . They destroyed roads and fields. The village was completely overcrowded with 550 long-established Merkendorf villages and around 300 refugees.

On January 1, 1972, the previously independent place was incorporated into the municipality of Memmelsdorf together with the neighboring town of Laubend .
