The Zeulenroda dam was built from 1968 to 1975 and is colloquially known as the Zeulenrodaer Meer . It is operated by the Thuringian long-distance water supply . The inauguration was in 1977.

use

In addition to the Weidatalsperre further downstream, the dam was one of the two drinking water dams in the Thuringian Slate Mountains on the Weida near Zeulenroda-Triebes . On September 1, 2012, the drinking water protection zone was lifted. From this point on, the dam, in conjunction with the Weidatalsperre, only serves as a reservoir for flood protection , low water elevation and tourist use.

dam

It is dammed by a 307 m long and almost 35 m high rock embankment made of diabase bulk material. An inclined clay plug as an inner seal, which is up to 12 m thick and extends 5.5 m into the subsoil, seals the around 360,000 m³ of bulk material.

The water is taken from a 49 meter high water extraction tower, which is connected to the land by a 105 m long prestressed concrete bridge. The maximum water depth is 30.1 m.

Pre-lock

The barrier also includes the pent-up by a 295 m long embankment dam Vorsperre Riedelmuhle at Läwitz . It holds almost 1.2 million m³ of water. The water surface reaches a maximum of 33.2 hectares, its length is 1.2 km. The dam is 13.2 m high above the foundation and 9 m above the valley floor.

The course of the river Weida in East Thuringia

When the 362-meter-long bridge over the reservoir to Quingenberg collapsed on August 13, 1973, four workers were killed and five seriously injured. The work (for the first time in the GDR a bridge in a free porch ) took place under deadline pressure and under pressure to save steel. Since this event took place on the anniversary of the construction of the wall , sabotage was initially suspected. The chief engineer and two employees were sentenced to several years in prison by the Gera District Court in May 1974 , but were then acquitted by the GDR Supreme Court . In the course of the investigation, it was ultimately found that outdated design specifications were the cause. Since 1994 a memorial stone on the street has been commemorating the four construction workers who died in 1973. The bridge has a height of 37 m above the bottom of the dam.

Before the dam was built, there were several mills in the valley . When the dam was built, many of them had to give way to the floods. During the GDR era, an FDGB holiday home, the bungalow village Zadelsdorf and the lido Zeulenroda were built on the shore . After the holiday hotel was closed on May 31, 1997, the house was completely renovated and completely rebuilt in 1999. Since 2001 the Bio-Seehotel Zeulenroda has been welcoming guests from all over the world again as a 4-star and bio hotel.

The circular hiking trail around the dam was awarded in 2006 as a " Quality Trail Hikable Germany". Another 25 km of hiking trails were created for re-certification in 2009. In 2012, the Zeulenrodaer Talsperrenwanderweg received the seal of approval from the German Hiking Association for the third time .

The DSV Nordic Walking Park "Thuringian Vogtland " in the Weidatal at the dam offers four differently difficult and well-marked routes.
