List of bodies of water in Thuringia

This list contains the most important bodies of water and dams in Thuringia . The Thuringian rivers differ considerably in terms of their amount of water. Rivers and brooks that arise in the mountainous south often carry much more water than rivers in the flatter north, while having the same length. This is due to the fact that there are many very productive springs in the Thuringian Forest and usually more precipitation falls there than in the lowlands.

Thuringia is poor in natural lakes and canals. Canals are completely absent, with the exception of the Leinakanal , which is due to the fact that Thuringia is insignificant for shipping. The Leina Canal was once created to supply the arid city of Gotha with enough drinking water. The natural lakes in Thuringia are all very small. However, there are isolated pond areas such as the Plothener ponds near Schleiz or the Ilmenau pond area in the Ilm district.

¹ The Werra is on a short section between Wahlhausen and Lindewerra in the Eichsfeld border river between Hesse and Thuringia, while its course before and after it runs through Hesse on both sides. The Allendorf gauge is located in Hesse just above the border section with Thuringia. The Werra level in Frankenroda lies further above in the catchment area, where both banks belong to the Thuringian region.
