The lower basin of the Goldisthal pumped storage power plant was commissioned by Vattenfall Europe AG in 2001 . It has a storage space of around 19 million m³ and is located near Goldisthal in Thuringia . The Schwarza (Saale) is dammed . In addition to its function as a pumped storage power plant, the basin also serves as flood protection in the Schwarzatal.
The reservoirs of the pumped storage power plant also include: the “ Goldisthal upper basin ” and the “ Gräftiegelsperre ” barrier .
The main barrier has a stone embankment with an external seal made of asphalt concrete as a barrier structure. The storage basin is 2,400 m long and up to 900 m wide.
