About this picture

Helbedündorf is a municipality in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia . About 2400 people live in Helbedündorf.

geography

The community is located in the western part of the Kyffhäuserkreis on the southern slope of the eastern Dün . In the east, the district extends to the upper Helbetal with the adjacent Hainleite and in the southeast to the Thuringian Basin . The altitude ranges from 522 m on the ridge of the Dün in the Keula forest to around 260 m near Toba in the basin landscape.

It is about 16 kilometers each to the eastern district town of Sondershausen and Mühlhausen to the southwest .

Community structure

The community consists of the two western districts of Holzthaleben and Keula, each with 1000 and 700 inhabitants, Friedrichsrode, Groß- and Kleinbrüchter in the center and the district of Toba and the smaller district of Peukendorf.

The villages of the municipality were first mentioned in a document as follows:

history

From the Iron Age, broken fragments prove the use of the area around the later castle complex in the upper Helbetal. This multi-part castle complex near Großbrüchter was protected by steep slopes and ramparts as well as ditches. It was built to protect the Helbe monastery courtyard.

There are remains of a castle on the west side of Keula. It probably had the task of controlling and protecting the road across the Dün in the direction of Mühlhausen. In addition, an Ottonian royal estate is mentioned in 967, the Emperor Otto II. The monastery of Fulda gave. That too had to be protected. In the Middle Ages, Keula Castle was the official seat of the Honsteiners , then the Schwarzburger . In 1772 and 1811 parts of the castle were demolished. The south wing, parts of the moat, cellar and remains of the outer wall have been preserved from the complex.

The community was founded on November 25, 1993 through the merger of the previously independent communities of Holzthaleben, Keula, Friedrichsrode and Großbrüchter. On July 22, 1995, Toba also joined. On September 2, 1995, Kleinbrüchter (with Peukendorf) was also incorporated.

coat of arms

The coat of arms was approved on February 28, 1995 by the Thuringian State Administration Office.

Blazon : "In Green over golden Wellenschildfuß, is on a red horse-dealer a red lying scattered fork, a golden growing beech."

The stylized beech represents the typical tree population of the community and the green color of the shield ground for the natural surroundings or the grove. The wave cut symbolizes the Helbe river . The long-term affiliation of the districts Großbrüchter, Holzthaleben and Keula to the former Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen is symbolized by the red spreading fork and the red horse crest in the golden field, similar to the regalia field in the princely coat of arms.

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Frank Jung.

Attractions

View of the district and transmitter Keula

The renovated half-timbered house ensemble in the Großbrüchter part of the municipality is worth seeing with its St. Spiritus Church, which was saved from deterioration in 1989. The bakery in the Holzthaleben district houses the local history museum, there is also a plague linden tree that is over 300 years old. In the Helbetal there are historical boundary stones that separated the Prussian area from the Schwarzburg area. There is also a stone atonement cross , the “Stone Virgin”. Above the Hebetal are the ruins of the Helbeburg, the construction of which goes back to the Bronze Age . The Keula moated castle in the Keula district is also worth seeing . Count Anton Günther II resided at the end of the courtyard garden and tower. In the Kleinbrüchter district there is a war memorial in memory of those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. The historic church in the Toba district is significant.

Economy and Transport

The main focus of the economy is handicrafts and agriculture and forestry. The Kunsthof Friedrichsrode achieved supraregional importance. In Keula , Deutsche Telekom AG operates a transmitter for VHF radio.

The somewhat remote community is connected to the neighboring cities by several state roads. The Greußen – Keula railway line leading from Ebeleben through the municipality was shut down when the potash industry on the Düne ended.
