history
Early history
The first settlement of today's municipality was by Germanic tribes ( fishing and warning ). The place was first mentioned in a document on January 20, 772 in a deed of donation to the Fulda monastery . It is assumed that the place "was founded by a leader of the Thuringians, who took possession of the land at the beginning of the 5th century, and named it 'Erike'". The market square formed the intersection of two trade routes: Sachsenburg - Mühlhausen - Kassel and Erfurt - Bad Tennstedt - Sondershausen - Magdeburg . So an application was made to the Count of Schwarzburg for the granting of market rights, which was granted in 1468. At that time the place had about 480 inhabitants. Großenehrich received town charter in 1521, had lower jurisdiction , its own administration and a ring wall with three gates (Niedertor, Kapelltor, Greußener Tor). A fourth gate was added later, the new gate. The settlement originally consisted of two town centers, one around the church and one around the town hall. The neighboring towns of Neustadt and Faula were given up - people settled between the town centers, so that a closed town was created. Around 1274, on the orders of Henry IV, the two protective castles were destroyed and not rebuilt. Großenehrich always remained an arable town and a craftsman town.
present
On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community of Wenigenehrich was incorporated into Grossenehrich.

City arms
Blazon : “In silver a bearded man clad in furs, on his left arm a red book on which a silver lamb rests, with his right pointing to the lamb; at his feet a small blue shield with a golden lion inside. "
The coat of arms comes from the oldest seal from 1562 and shows John the Baptist, originally in his left hand a lamb with a double cross, in his right hand holding a flag. The inscription read: SIGILLVM OPPIDANORVM IN EHRICH MAIORIS. Johannes was the original church patron of Großenehrich, whose church seal was incorporated into the coat of arms. The lion's shield is that of the Counts of Schwarzburg.
