Holzengel is a part of the community of Großenehrich in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia . In 2007 it had 224 inhabitants.

Holzengel is located 18 kilometers southeast of Sondershausen on the Wirbelbach . The district is located on the southern slope of the Hainleite on the edge of the Thuringian Basin . The traffic connection is via the state road 2088 and the federal road 4 .

Holzengel was first mentioned in a document on May 27, 1088. The root word "angel" comes from the Germanic Angles that settled here. Until 1918 the place belonged to the rule of the principality Schwarzburg-Sondershausen .

Attractions

One of the sights in Holzengel is the Church of St. Trinitatis . The previous building of the church, rebuilt in 1753, was completely destroyed in 1747 by a fire after a lightning strike . In today's church there is an extensive ceiling painting in the nave . The churchyard is rich in old grave monuments. In front of the church there is a war memorial for the soldiers who died and went missing in both world wars.

In Holzengel there is also a limestone seat niche portal from a former property from 1596.
