Westerengel is a part of the community of the city of Großenehrich in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia .
geography
The place is located in a shallow valley basin on the southern slope of the Hainleite and on the edge of the Thuringian Basin with an altitude of 310 meters above sea level. The neighboring village of Kirchengel is just 500 meters away. The Haufendorf has a connection to the state road 2088 and the federal road 4 .
A spring with a following stream rises in the place. The agriculturally used area is visibly loosened up in the corridor by orchards, rows of fruit trees, hedges and field trees.
history
The village, populated by Germanic Anglers , was first mentioned in a document on February 17, 1125. Until 1918 the place belonged to the rule of the principality Schwarzburg-Sondershausen .
Westerengel was occupied by US troops in April 1945 and by the Red Army in July . It belonged to the Soviet occupation zone and from 1949 to the GDR . As a result of reunification, the state of Thuringia came into being in October 1990.
The agricultural cluster village has well-preserved half-timbered houses with paved courtyards. After the fall of the Wall , the sports center was renovated, the fire station and the village community center were modernized and all village streets were repaired.
The double tower church of St. Benedict dates from 1822. A gate that was part of a defensive wall leads to the churchyard.
