Heinrich von Gorkum (* around 1378 in Gorinchem ; † February 19, 1431 in Cologne ; also Henricus de Gorinchem ) was a Dutch Thomist and theology professor in Cologne.

Life

There is no definite information about his youth, but Heinrich von Gorkum must have been born around 1378. He studied - probably from 1395 - at the University of Paris , where he obtained a Baccalaureus in 1397 and the title of Licentiatus artium in 1398 . In that year he started teaching as a Magister regens a Burse , a job that he did at least until 1402. From 1402 to 1409, however, his name is no longer mentioned in the files; nothing can be established with certainty about this period. In 1410 and 1414 he was procurator of the English nation , which also included the Dutch, Scandinavians and North Germans. 1411–1413 it is the receptor of the Germans. It is doubtful whether he was rector last in 1413. His doctorate for a Magisterium 1418 is also documented. He then probably studied theology in Paris, because in 1419 (December 20th) he enrolled in Cologne as a licentiate in theology. In January 1420 he was admitted to the doctorate as a Paris baccalaureate, which he completed on February 27 of the same year. From 1420 Heinrich worked as a theology professor at the old University of Cologne . In the same year he was elected rector. Heinrich founded a Burse in Cologne , which was later called Gymnasium Montanum (the first of the university's three major Burses), and developed his literary activity. In 1424 Heinrich became vice-chancellor of the university, that is the executive chancellor, the official chancellor was always the archbishop. In 1421 (Easter, March 23, 1421 to Michaelis, September 29) he was enrolled at the Artes Faculty of the University of Rostock , which had only recently opened (November 13, 1419) . In the summer semester of 1422 he received his doctorate there (apparently for the second time after Paris) as a Bachelor of Artes. In the summer semester of 1427 he taught briefly in the Artes Faculty, at least his master's degree was recognized. In 1427 he received an ecclesiastical benefice intended for the Cologne professors in Cologne by receiving the canonical of the St. Ursula Collegiate Church . This secured his livelihood as a professor. In 1428 he was elected pastor of the church of Klein St. Martin . He held both functions until his death. The theology professor died on February 19, 1431.

A new interest in the works of Thomas Aquinas emerged from Heinrich's writings , which Heinrich summarized in a didactically skillful way. The works of Heinrich von Gorkum brought about a revival of the Thomistic doctrine in the 15th century. Heinrich also tried in his works to reconcile the ideas of Thomas Aquinas with those of Albertus Magnus . Although Heinrich represented the via antiqua , his works also show the influence of Jean Gerson and Neoplatonic traits.

Works (selection)

Heinrich von Gorkum wrote philosophical, theological and logical writings, a large part of which were also printed. Of the traditional philosophical writings attributed to Heinrich von Gorkum, authorship could only be established with certainty for the work Propositiones libri physicorum . The theological works deal with three major scriptures:

  • Lectura super gospel
  • Quaestiones in Summam Sancti Thomae (Compendium Summae Theologiae) , Esslingen, Konrad Fyner, 1473
  • Conclusiones super IV libros Sententiarum , (Brussels, Brothers of Common Life), around 1480

Heinrich's authorship of the work Supplementum (Complementum) IIIae Partis Summae Theologiae S. Thomae Aquintis is controversial. Heinrich also wrote several smaller tracts, some of which have been handed down together. It affects the following works, among others:

  • Tractatus de divinis nominibus
  • Tractatus de observatione festorum
  • Tractatus de justo bello
  • Tractatus de superstitiosis quibusdam casibus
  • Tractatus de practica ejiciendi daemones
  • Tractatus contra articulos Hussitarum

Heinrich von Gorkum is also said to have written some writings on logic, of which AG Weiler was unable to find any manuscripts or printed copies.
