history
The street village was first mentioned in a document in January / September 1220. The root word angel comes from the Germanic tribe of the Angles who settled in the area.
The church of St. Michael was built from natural stones and has the character of a fortified church . The west gable is planted with wild wine . The churchyard, which continues to serve as a cemetery, is surrounded by a high and wide wall, which was also used for defensive purposes. A war memorial stands in front of the north side of the church. There is a pond near the churchyard. There are orchards around the place , which loosen up the agriculturally oriented area a little. Until 1918 the place belonged to the rule of the principality Schwarzburg-Sondershausen .
After initially American occupation in April 1945, Kirchengel was part of the Soviet Zone from July of the same year and of the GDR from 1949 . The peasants were subjected to collectivization and had to find new forms of ownership after reunification in 1990.
In the course of the expansion of renewable energies , 22 wind turbines were built in the district , which largely dominate the landscape.
