history

The town of Topfstedt was first mentioned in a document in 842, when a certain Frecholf donated his goods to the Fulda Abbey in Topfestat .

However, the deed of donation itself has not been preserved. Its wording was entered in a cartular (collection of documentary documents) created by Abbot Hrabanus Maurus since 833. All donations from Thuringian private individuals to the monastery are collected in this cartular . But even this cartular has not survived. However, a short summary of the content of the document has been preserved. This can be read in the second volume of the so-called Codex Eberhardi . The exact time when Frecholf was donated cannot be traced either.

Since the donation probably fell during the reign of the Fulda abbot Hrabanus Maurus (822-842), the last possible year , 842, was assumed to be the year of the first mention. The oldest existing certificate from Topfstedt dates from 1089 ; however, this is a fake. The forgery is a certificate of ownership from the Reinhardsbrunn monastery. The bogus document was made around 1165 by a monk from the Reinhardsbrunn monastery to protect the monastery from feudal powers.

In 1333 the two districts of Niedertopfstedt and Obertopfstedt , which still exist today, were mentioned for the first time . Both places belonged to the administrative office of Weißensee until 1815 . The decisions of the Congress of Vienna they came to Prussia and were in 1816 the district Weissensee in the administrative district of Erfurt the province of Saxony allocated to which they belonged to the 1944th

Visit of the Prussian King

On October 15, 1806, one day after the double battle near Jena and Auerstedt , the defeated Prussian troops hurried from Weißensee through Topfstedt to reach Magdeburg fortress .

To the rescue of King Friedrich Wilhelm III. Before the capture, Lieutenant General Kalckreuth used a ruse. Without the successful completion of this ruse, the king would have been captured by French troops very likely. The king had ridden from Auerstedt to Sömmerda the night after the battle and had taken up quarters in the parsonage there. On October 16, 1806, a hussar regiment and a dragoon regiment took the king into the middle and escorted him via Weißensee-Ottenhausen to Niedertopfstedt. When he arrived in Niedertopfstedt, the king wanted to have a meal in the manor house, but had to flee along with an escort of 50 horsemen under Lieutenant General von Blücher as French hussars entered Greussen at around 10 a.m. , but they were driven out again by a squadron of Prussian dragoons could.

The king then continued his escape in the direction of Sondershausen . At noon on October 16, 1806, Prussian troops gathered between Niedertopfstedt and Greußen for a battle of retreat to cover the king's escape. Between 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. there was a brief battle in which a Prussian rearguard of 12,000 men took part. After the meeting, parts of this rearguard pulled through the town, some without weapons. Most of them, however, were captured by French troops. To commemorate the escape visit of the Prussian king, a memorial plaque was placed in the room of the manor in which he had stayed, but it was removed again in 1945.

coat of arms

Blazon : “Divided by red and silver; topped with a transverse wolf tang in mixed up tinctures. "

By the year 1987, the municipality Topfstedt possessed with her two districts not have its own municipal coat of arms .

At that time, the heraldry group "Black Lion" was commissioned in Leipzig to research a community coat of arms . The research carried out by the specialist group did not reveal any historical records relating to a municipal coat of arms. According to various documents, members of the von Topfstedt family, which died out at the end of the 14th century, appeared as witnesses between 1175 and 1369 . However, their coat of arms was never described. In most cases, the seals on these documents were no longer present or completely illegible.

Since no coat of arms could be proven, the heraldry department was commissioned with the design and coloring of a local coat of arms. The historical basis was the coat of arms of the von Topfstedt depicted in Johann Siebmacher's book of arms of the dead Saxon nobility of the Prussian province of Saxony. This coat of arms shows a transverse barb on the shield, also called a wolf tang. The coat of arms was discovered on the seal of a certificate issued by Hermann von Topfstedt for the Kelbra monastery . It is the only surviving coat of arms of this gender. For the municipal coat of arms, the specialists in the Heraldry Research Group modified Hermann von Topfstedt's seal by dividing the coat of arms shield and placed a wolf tang in mixed colors in each part, representing one of the two districts. Red and silver refer to the colors of the historic Thuringian heraldic animal, the colorful lion of Ludowinger , since 1990 again the coat of arms of the reborn State of Thuringia sheet ( Coat of arms of Thuringia ). The new local coat of arms was confirmed by the local council and officially introduced on August 30, 1987 by means of a coat of arms letter; it is registered in the Quedlinburg coat of arms under the number QWR II / 87032.
