Thomas Topfstedt

Thomas Topfstedt (born February 18, 1947 in Erfurt ) is a German art historian and professor at the University of Leipzig .

After graduating from high school in Erfurt, Topfstedt began studying art history , prehistory and early history at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig in 1965 , which he completed in 1970. He then worked until 1975 as a research assistant at the Institute for Urban Development and Architecture (Department of History and Theory of Architecture) of the Building Academy of the GDR in Berlin . In 1975 he moved to the University of Leipzig, where he in 1980 with a thesis on the development of urban planning and architecture in the German Democratic Republic from 1949 to 1955 doctorate was. In 1984 Topfstedt completed his PhD B with an investigation into urban planning in the GDR from 1955 to 1971 . In 1988 he was appointed full professor for socialist contemporary art at the Cultural and Art Studies Section of the Karl Marx University in Leipzig. From 1991 to 1993 he was professor for art history, since 1993 he has been professor for art history with special emphasis on art from the 19th and 20th centuries at the University of Leipzig. From 1990 Topfstedt was acting director, from 1993 to 1996 managing director of the Institute for Art History at the University of Leipzig. In 1997/98 he was vice dean and 1998/99 dean of the Faculty of History, Art and Oriental Studies. He was a member of the SED from 1967 to January 1990 when he left .

Topfstedt has been a member of the German Academy for Urban Development and Regional Planning since 1994, a member of the Historical Commission since 1995 and the Commission for the Art History of Central Germany of the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig since 2006 .
