City structure

The five localities of Allmenhausen , Gundersleben , Rockensußra , Thuringia and Wiedermuth belong to the city of Ebeleben . Ebeleben acts as the administrative location for the communities of Abtsbessingen , Bellstedt , Freienbessingen , Holzsußra , Rockstedt and Wolferschwenda .

A district of Ebeleben is Marksußra .

history

The establishment of the place by fishing and warning is assumed for the period between the 4th and 6th centuries. The Ebeleben district of Marksußra is mentioned in the Bonifatius legend in 732 and documented in 772. Ebeleben itself is first mentioned in a document in 1198. In the western part of the town center there was a medieval castle. Ministerials from the Thuringian landgrave were the lords of Ebeleben. In 1198 a knight of Ebeleben was mentioned. The Ebelebener were later vassals of the Counts of Schwarzburg. In 1372 the fiefdom was divided. Oberlehnsgeber were now the Counts of Schwarzburg and the Landgrave of Thuringia . In 1525 the castle was destroyed by farmers and citizens of the city of Mühlhausen. In 1544 the Reformation was introduced in Ebeleben by the knight Hans von Ebeleben. The city of Mühlhausen financed the new Mühlhäuser building in the park.

In 1616 the indebted Ebelebener sold the property with the Ebeleben office to the Count of Schwarzburg. In 1651 the family of those from Ebeleben died out. The Ebeleben castle was built by the Black burgers and served from 1651 to 1681 as a residence. In 1774 they filled in the northwest corner of the moat to create a French park .

Until 1918 the place belonged to the rule of the principality Schwarzburg-Sondershausen . In 1928 Ebeleben was granted city rights. From 1932 to 1934 the church of St. Bartholomew was renovated. During the Second World War , forced laborers from countries occupied by Germany had to work in agriculture.

On April 8th and 9th, 1945 troops of the US Army destroyed the Ebelebener Schloss with the park with fighter bombers , through tank and artillery fire ; Church, domain, five houses and fifteen farm buildings as well as the brickyard were damaged. To prevent the advance of these troops, the SS blew up bridges. During the Second World War, the place suffered over 100 dead and missing.

As a direct consequence of the war, large numbers of displaced persons moved to Ebeleben, which grew by 1,000 new residents. With the handover of the occupying power in Thuringia by the US military administration to the Soviet, the city of Ebeleben also became part of the Soviet zone of occupation .

A severe flood in 1947 flooded the district of Marksussra, among others .

Incorporations

On March 8, 1994 the unified church Ebeleben was founded. The previously independent places Allmenhausen , Rockensussra and Wiedermuth were incorporated. Gundersleben joined them on December 29, 1995. However, they kept their own local councils as municipal representatives . On December 31, 2019, Thüringenhausen was incorporated into Ebeleben.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In blue a golden beehive with a silver bottom board and seven golden bees."

The oldest existing community seal from 1884 only shows the beehive. The number of bees depicted in the coat of arms varied over time. Originally there were probably eight, at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries twelve, during the Nazi era a swarm of bees, and currently there are seven. At times the beehive was also shown without bees. The coat of arms with eight bees appeared for the town elevation of Ebelebens in 1928. There are various theses about the meaning of the number: number of councilors, number of places belonging to the Ebeleben district at that time, connection to the former Marksussra monastery - they may point to Cistercian monks who owned monasteries in the area, number of guilds previously resident in Ebeleben. Most likely, the number has no meaning. In connection with the city charter on September 1, 1928, the city coat of arms was also officially confirmed.

Town twinning

Ebeleben's partner municipality is the Bavarian market town of Mitwitz in Upper Franconia.

Culture and sights

  • Castle park with the last remains of Ebeleben Castle
  • Today's town hall: Today's town hall is a former domain house and was considered to be one of the most expressive Ebeleben buildings in the style of the 18th century. Around 1900 the building at that time was classified as in need of renovation. In 1909 it was demolished and rebuilt despite resistance from citizens who wanted to keep the old architectural style. Due to its location, the mansion was adapted to the existing ambience, whereby some elements of the previous building were included, e.g. B. the archway on its southern side. After the Second World War, the city administration moved here.
  • Evangelical Church of St. Bartholomew : The church was first mentioned in 1253. In 1515 and 1571 construction work on the church was announced. In 1680 Jakob Töpfer designed a new altar. Major renovations were carried out between 1701 and 1721 under Christian Wilhelm I. In 1727 the royal box was built. In 1793 the church was rebuilt, which was again extensively renovated from 1870 to 1880. In 1930 a heater was installed. In 1960 and 1970 the interior (wall and ceiling) was repainted. The church received a new bell in 1966. The weather vane was reconstructed in 1993 when the church roof was re-coated.
  • War memorial: This memorial was erected in 1922 to commemorate those who fell in World War I. These prodigal sons of the city were commemorated on Heroes' Remembrance Day from 1939 to 1945. On the occasion of the 56th anniversary after the beginning of the 1st World War, a memorial plaque for the fallen of the 2nd World War was put up in 1995. Every year on the day of national mourning in front of the memorial, under a mighty chestnut tree, an honor is held, which goes to the fallen of the two world wars as well as the victims of escape and defense. So far, the municipal administration knows 132 names of those killed in World War II.
  • The Wilhelminian style house at Goethestrasse 3 , which was completed in 1904.

outdoor pool

The Ebeleben open-air swimming pool borders the palace gardens to the west. It was opened in 1968 in the presence of the then Olympic swimming champion Roland Matthes .

Since the city of Ebeleben no longer bore the running costs of the outdoor pool alone, an association for the maintenance of the outdoor pool was founded in autumn 2012. The aim of the association is to support the city in the maintenance of the pool through membership and donation contributions, regular events and voluntary, personnel assignments and thus to maintain an important part of Ebeleben's leisure activities.

Regular events

A castle park festival has been held every year at the beginning of July since 1992 . For several years now, the Schlossparkfest has been organized exclusively by the local sports clubs - without the support of the city. Most recently, this task was taken over by Gut Holz bowling club and VfL 1888 Ebeleben.

Economy and Infrastructure

Silo building in Ebeleben (2012)

The Ebelebens economy is characterized by small and medium-sized businesses, with a focus on construction and animal feed.

Rail transport

For a long time Ebeleben was important as a railway junction. The Hohenebra – Ebeleben , Ebeleben – Mühlhausen and Greußen – Keula railway lines once crossed at Ebeleben station . Passenger traffic no longer takes place, the only remaining track section Hohenebra - Ebeleben - Menteroda is maintained by the RbT Regiobahn Thuringia and used for freight traffic. The railway line to Rockensussra and Schlotheim, which existed until a few years ago, was converted into a cycle path.

Silo systems

From 1969 to 1975 a 54 meter high silo with a 68 meter high machine house was built for the local feed factory, which has a storage capacity of 80,000 tons. From 1976 to 1982 the silo was expanded again by 88,000 tons of storage capacity. The silo facility in Ebeleben was the most modern of its kind in GDR times. It was the prototype of a whole series of similar feed factories.
