history

At the beginning of the 9th century, Sussra was first mentioned as Suzare in a list of the goods lent by Archbishop Lullus († 786) of Mainz to the monastery of Hersfeld von Free . The settlement of Marksussra was first mentioned in a document in 1262 at Dobecker, III 3036.

The Cistercian nunnery founded in Marksussra in 1285 was badly damaged in the Peasants' War in 1525 and abandoned in 1551. The monastery property, later called the domain , was used to finance and maintain the Ebeleber monastery school . Until 1918, the place in the Ebeleben office belonged to the rule of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen .

In 1965 the Catholic St. Mary's Church was built by expellees from the city of Jihlava . The church is built in the style of a barrack. It was one of only a few churches that were allowed to be built in the GDR in 1965. Its construction was only approved because it could not be seen from the street. In 1968 a small stele was erected at the entrance to the church, depicting Christ blessing with a donkey. In 2001 a bell stalls with a bell were erected next to the entrance to the church. It is a gift from the community of Hösbach in Franconia, weighs 230 kg and has a h sound. The church houses a series of paintings by Horst Bark (1928–2013) depicting a Stations of the Cross with 15 stations, which were hung there a few years after the fall of the Wall .

The church also has a small organ from the workshop of Gerhard Böhm from Gotha , which was inaugurated on Whit Monday 1994. Features of the organ: Manual : Gedackt 8 ', Rohrflöte 4', Principal 2 '( brochure ), Sifflöte 1' or 1 1/3 ', Cymbel 2-fold; Pedal : attached, louvre sill behind the prospectus pipes, to be operated with a stop. The organ has 365 pipes.

In front of the church is the parsonage, built in 1898 as the home of the director of the Ebeleben Raiffeisen bank. The current pastor (2017) is Otto Thonhofer.

The partner parish is the Catholic parish of St. Johann Baptist in Roggendorf / Thenhoven , whose members contributed significantly to the purchase of the organ with donations.
