The Keulaer Wald is part of the large forest area on the plateau of the eastern Dün in the far west of the Kyffhäuserkreis in northern Thuringia , ( Germany ).

geography

location

The Keula Forest is up to 4 km long and 2 km wide and is mainly located in the district of Keula, which belongs to the municipality of Helbedündorf, about 24 km west of Sondershausen and 14 km northeast of Mühlhausen .

In the west it borders on the large open- cast limestone mine of the Deuna cement works , in the north as far as the edge of the thin plateau, in the northeast at Schönberg on the adjacent clearing wood and in the east on the Holzthalebener Wald . In the south, the plateau is used for agriculture.

Surveys

In the Keula Forest area, the highest elevation of the Dün, at 522.3 m, lies directly on the edge of the limestone plateau in the border area with the Eichsfeld district . In the west just before the opencast mine it still reaches a height of 516 m and in the northeast with the Schönberg a height of 498.2 m. To the south and southwest, the plateau drops with a flat slope to about 440 m.

Keulaer Rondel

About 600 m east of the highest elevation and about 3 km north of Keula and immediately above Vollenborn there is a small treeless hill (517 m), the so-called Keulaer Rondel . Directly above a small rock face on the edge of the thin plateau there is a vantage point of the Eichsfelder Kessel , the Ohmgebirge and the upper Leinebergland and, if visibility is good, to the Brocken in the Upper Harz . In the square there is a memorial stone in honor of the former Rondel society , an information board and seating for the hikers. Numerous regional and supraregional hiking trails lead to the Keulaer Rondel, as well as the L1016 country road between Keula and Friedrichsrode , which runs roughly south .

nature

On the shell limestone plateau, which is partly covered with loess, a forest consisting mainly of beeches has emerged through plenter-like forest management. Diverse ground cover has developed under the trees, including woodruff and various types of orchids. An information board at the forest parking lot provides information about local conditions.

Due to its diverse flora and fauna, parts of the Keula Forest are part of the following protected areas:

  • LSG Dün-Helbetal in the east
  • NSG Keulaer Wald in the center (297 hectares, designated 1961)
  • FFH area NSG Keulaer Wald (302 hectares, almost congruent with the NSG; Natura 2000 project area No. 167)

NSG Keulaer Wald

The nature reserve is located on the shell limestone plateau of the Dün, which slopes gently to the southeast. The NSG comprises characteristic site and vegetation forms as well as beech plenter forest (almost exclusively woodruff and barley beech forest, including a wild garlic training typical of the Keula forest).
