Florent Marius Piétrus (born January 19, 1981 in Les Abymes , Guadeloupe ) is a French basketball player . After starting his professional career in France, Piétrus moved to the Spanish ACB league in 2004 , where he played for various clubs. In 2013 he moved back to France. In addition to three French championships, Piétrus won a Spanish championship and in 2010 the ULEB Eurocup at international club level . With the French national team , Piétrus won the gold medal at the 2013 European basketball championship and previously the silver medal in 2011 and the bronze medal in 2005 . His brother Mickaël Piétrus, who was one year younger than him, has been playing in the US professional league NBA since 2003 .

Club career

Together with his brother Mickaël, Florent Piétrus switched to the training program of the southern French club Élan Béarnais from Pau , which was then the most successful French basketball club with six national championships in nine years between 1996 and 2004. In 1999, Florent moved up to the squad of the first team in the LNB Pro A and was able to win three national championships (2001, 2003, 2004) and two cup wins (2002, 2003) with the club. In addition, they won the league cup Semaine de As in 2003 and thus got the national triple . While his brother Mickaël was selected in the 2003 NBA Draft and moved to the highest endowed professional league, Florent was not taken into account and moved to Spain a year later.

At Unicaja from Málaga , Andalusia , they won the Copa del Rey cup competition for the first time in the first season of Piétrus in 2005 . A year later you could even win the Spanish championship for the first time in 2006. In the ULEB Euroleague 2006/07 they reached the Final Four tournament in Athens in the top European league after a group win in the intermediate round and a victory in the quarter-final series over national competitor Winterthur FC Barcelona . After a loss in the semifinals against PBK CSKA Moscow , they won the game for third place against TAU Ceramica and became the best Spanish team in this prestigious competition. For the 2007/08 season, Piétrus moved to league rivals MMT Estudiantes . Even with Piétrus, the second premier capital club next to Real Madrid failed to qualify for the play-offs for the Spanish championship.

In 2008 Piétrus moved to the east coast to Pamesa in Valencia . After a sponsorship change, the team started as Power Electronics Valencia in 2009 . In the final of the Eurocup 2009/10 they beat the German representative Alba Berlin . After winning the Eurocup, he initially remained without a contract and finally signed a four-week contract with Caja Laboral in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque, at the start of the season . After this contract expired and three championship games, he returned to Power Electronics in Valencia on a temporary basis. The respective expiring contracts were then always extended and for the 2011/12 season he finally received a contract for the entire season.

For the 2013/14 season he moved to France to SLUC Nancy Basket . Piétrus stayed there until the end of the 2015/16 season. He accepted an offer from league rival BCM Gravelines , and in February 2018 he was signed by Strasbourg IG . Following the 2018/19 season, he initially remained without a club before being signed by the first division club Orléans Loiret Basket in early January 2020 .

National team

After previously serving in youth and junior selection teams, Piétrus made his debut in 2001 in the French men's national team. At the EM 2003 in Sweden they were victorious up to the semi-finals, which were lost to the eventual European champions Lithuania . In the game for third place they lost Italy with two points, so that they returned home without a medal and thus lost their last qualifying place for the 2004 Olympic Games . At the following European Championship in 2005 in Serbia and Montenegro , they started weakly with two defeats in the preliminary round, defeated the hosts in a round of hope and defending champion Lithuania in the quarterfinals. After losing to eventual European champions Greece in the semi-finals, this time the bronze medal match was clearly won against Spain .

At the basketball world championship 2006 in Japan they lost in the quarter-finals against European champions Greece and were able to win the remaining two games and take fifth place in the placement round. In the subsequent European Championship finals in 2007 in Spain, they lost the quarter-finals against eventual European champions Russia and also lost the remaining two games in the placement round, so that a qualification for the Olympics was again missed. At the European Championship finals in 2009 , the quarter -finals were again the final destination for the French hopes for a medal and the defeat against eventual European champions Spain was the only defeat in the entire tournament for France, who remained victorious in the placement round and finished in fifth place.

The 2010 Basketball World Cup started with three opening wins, including one against defending champions Spain. This was followed by three losses, including one loss in the round of 16 against hosts Turkey , which meant they were eliminated from the tournament. At the 2011 European Championship finals in Lithuania they remained victorious until the final, where they were again defeated by the Spaniards, except for a defeat in the interim round against defending champions Spain. Qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games had already been achieved by winning the semi-finals over the previously undefeated Russians.

In 2013, Piétrus won gold with France. In 2016 he ended his career in the national team after 230 full international matches.
