The nature reserve Süd-West-Kyffhäuser is located in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia . It extends southeast of Steinthaleben , a district of the community Kyffhäuserland , and northwest of the core town Bad Frankenhausen / Kyffhäuser . The state road L 2292 runs on the western and northern edge of the area, the B 85 on the eastern edge and the L 1172 on the southern edge. The Kleine Wipper , a left tributary of the Unstrut, flows south of the area .

The 831.7 hectare area with NSG no. 320 was placed under nature protection in 1961.
