The Rothenburg nature reserve is located in the municipality of Kyffhäuserland in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia .

It extends southeast of the core city of Kelbra and northeast of Steinthaleben , a district of the municipality of Kyffhäuserland. The B 85 runs along the western and south-western edge of the area and the L 200 state road to the north. The state border with Saxony-Anhalt runs along the northern edge, while the Kelbra dam , which is around 600 hectares in size , extends to the northwest .

The 402.3 ha area with the NSG no. 80 was placed under nature protection in 1961.
