The castle was first mentioned in 967 as an Ottonian royal estate . Later the castle was the official seat of the Honsteiners and then came under Blackburg rule. Extensions took place in the 17th century, parts of the castle were demolished in 1772 and 1811.
Remains of the castle buildings, the castle gate, the cellar, the fortification wall, the bridge to the castle and the moat are still preserved from the castle complex with its oval core .
