geography

course

The Geislede is fed from two source arms: the Gieselbach , the at Heuthen rises to about 420 m and the height of Kreuzebra coming Ebra . After they have merged, it flows in a westerly direction to Geisleden and then in a northwesterly direction to Heilbad Heiligenstadt . The course of the Geislede river enters the Heilbad Heiligenstadt urban area from the south-east and flows into the Leine at the Sperberwiese .

The Geislede valley separates the two mountain ranges of the Dün and Oberes Eichsfeld to the northwest .

Course in the urban area of Heiligenstadt

The Geislede flows through the historic old town of Heiligenstadt from east to west and there it drove up to six mills, of which the Herrenmühle (also Fronmühle) and the Klausmühle have been preserved. In the urban area, the water was heavily canalized and partially built over with buildings such as the Jesuit college.

Outside the city walls, more mills were built, of which an artificial watercourse, the mill moat with the cape mill, testifies. The names of the adjacent streets Mühlgraben and Auf der Rinne can be derived from it.

waterfall

The course of the Geislede was artificially divided in Heiligenstadt for flood protection reasons by the construction of a weir in the area of the old cemetery at the Geisleder Tor . The excess water was drained to the Leine before the city wall. At the Scheuche on the edge of today's Heinrich-Heine-Kurpark , a 7 m high waterfall was created on a steep red sandstone step. This can be viewed both from above from a viewing platform and from below.

This waterfall inspired Theodor Storm to write his fairy tale The Regentrude .

Tributaries

The tributaries of the Geislede are the Buchborn, the Dachstalgraben and the Pferdebach.

Mills

There were a total of 17 mills along the Geislede, one in Heuthen am Gieselbach, four mills below Geisleden and 12 mills in the urban area of Heiligenstadt. Of the partially extensive weir systems in Heiligenstadt, three were dismantled and designed as a bed slide .

Origin of name

The Old High German name Geizlaha refers to a Geißbach (from goat or goat) both for the river and for the place Geisleden. An upper course of the Geislede is still called Gieselbach today (from Gissel- or Geiselbach ).
