The Lichte is an approx. 17 km long tributary of the Schwarza in the Thuringian Forest / Thuringian Slate Mountains Nature Park .

source

The light rises as Kleine Lichte in Neuhaus am Rennweg (district Igelshieb ) in the immediate vicinity of the Rennsteig , the watershed between Thuringia and Franconia .

Course and mouth

From the headwaters, it takes its course in a northerly direction, initially as Kleine Lichte through the parcel of the same name to the village of Waschdorf . There it unites with the Kieselbach ( ) and now follows the Waschdorfstraße as a light (river) to the Sonneberger Straße . Then it follows the Lichtetal along the federal road 281 to Wallendorf and on to Geiersthal .

At the northern exit of the town, below Geiersthal, the river feeds the Leibis-Lichte dam ( ) with the Deesbach dam ( ). West of the community of Unterweißbach the Lichte flows into the Schwarza at the Mankenbachsmühle .

Naming

The naming of the river in the valley of the light stands mh. for lichtaha , so goes back to water, and means something like a bright, clear river. This differentiated it from the schwarzaha (Schwarzwasser) in the neighboring Schwarzatal . The "lichta" is already mentioned in 1386 as a border river in documents with other marrow divisions such as Lamprechtstal, Schlagebach u. a. called. The place Lichte got its name from this water. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that the form of light , which is still used today, emerged.

Specialty

The mountain slopes of the Lichte and Piesau valleys drop steeply and are often more than 100 m high.

Lichte, Piesau and the numerous tributaries from the surrounding side valleys have been known for centuries for their deposits of gold soap and are among the rivers with the richest gold in Germany. Hobby gold prospectors are still occasionally successful today.
