The Wechmar dam is located in the west of the Wechmar municipality in the Gotha district , Thuringia . It dams the Schmallgraben - water is also collected from the apple city with a transfer . The dam was put into operation in 1983 and is used for irrigation purposes. The dam borders with its eastern bank on the nature reserve Röhnberg with the mountain of the same name at 383 m above sea level. The Schmallgraben drains the reservoir in the northern area of the dam, first flowing in a north-westerly direction and then in a right curve around the Schmallhügel , then in a straight line to the north, and after reaching the Apfelstädtaue between Wechmar and Wandersleben, it flows into the Apfelstädt.
The barrier structure is a homogeneous earth dam made of clayey silt , pointing from SW to NE. It was founded on the Holocene and Pleistocene sediments . The dam has a protective layer of gravel on the water side . The reservoir was provided with a sealing carpet. A tower in the storage space, which can be reached via a bridge, is used for removal.
