Grimmenthal is part of the municipality of Ober Maßfeld-Grimmenthal in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

The pilgrimage site of Grimmenthal borders directly on Ober Maßfeld in the Werratal to the east . Grimmenthal and Ober Maßfeld have not only grown together locally, but also in reality. In 1497 Grimmenthal was first mentioned in a document. The place belonged to the Amt of Maßfeld in the county of Henneberg -Schleusingen. In 1680 he came to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen .
A miraculous image of the Virgin Mary saw the inauguration of the pilgrimage chapel. The construction of the Werra bridge was financed by the income. The place of pilgrimage ended with the Reformation ; Instead, Count Georg Ernst von Henneberg-Schleusingen had a hospital built for the poor.
