Ober Maßfeld-Grimmenthal is a municipality in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen in the Franconian south of Thuringia and a member and branch of the administration of the Dolmar-Salzbrücke administrative community .
geography
Ober Maßfeld-Grimmenthal is located in the Werra valley southeast of Meiningen . The place and today's community are made up of the former place of pilgrimage Grimmenthal and the town of Ober Maßfeld to the west .
history
The community was first mentioned in 837 as Mahesfeld . The current church was built between 1600 and 1612 .
The district of Grimmenthal (old name: Grinthal) was a place of pilgrimage at the end of the Middle Ages (since 1498). A picture of Mary that was there earlier is said to have worked miraculously. In 1498 a pilgrimage chapel was consecrated. The Werra Bridge, for example, was built from the proceeds. The place of pilgrimage came to an end with the Reformation around 1536. Immediately afterwards, a hospital for the poor was created. After 1945 it was turned into an after-work home that existed until 1990.
Grimmenthal was hit by the persecution of witches in 1627 : The widow Barbara Urff (Oerff) got into a witch trial and was beheaded. In Ober Maßfeld, there were persecutions of witches from 1602 to 1658: five people were charged. The first victim was Stahlmart (Margaretha Stahl) in 1602. The outcome of a process is unknown.
