About this picture

Frankenheim (also Frankenheim auf der Rhön, Rhöner Platt : Frankeme ) is a municipality between Meiningen and Fulda in the Rhön , it is a member of the Hohe Rhön administrative community , which has its administrative headquarters in the town of Kaltennordheim .

geography

The community is located in the Hohe Rhön, in the three-state corner of Hesse , Thuringia and Bavaria , in the Rhön Biosphere Reserve and is at an altitude of 750–780 m above sea level. NN the highest village in the Rhön. Above the village is the Ellenbogen (Rhön) panoramic mountain . Neighboring towns are Hilders , Leubach , Reichenhausen and Birx .

history

The place was first mentioned in a document from April 13, 1228. For centuries the neighboring territories of Fulda Monastery , Diocese of Würzburg , County of Henneberg and the Imperial Knights von der Tann fought over Frankenheim and Birx. In 1569 a settlement was made in favor of Henneberg. Since then the place has belonged to the Kaltennordheim office , which later belonged to Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach ( Eisenacher Oberland ). Until 1900 the only income opportunities were in whip production, weaving, brush production and in the wood goods sector; the village was long the poorest in the Rhön.

politics

Municipal council

The council consists of the mayor and 12 other elected council members.

After the local elections in 2009, the CDU provided seven community representatives and Die Linke five. In 2014, instead of the CDU, the voter community We for Frankenheim took part in the elections , which won eight seats, and the Left received four.

mayor

Alexander Schmitt was elected honorary mayor for the first time on June 6, 2010 with 83.3% of the vote. In the election on June 5, 2016, he was re-elected with 95% of the votes; a total of 47.2% of those eligible to vote took part.

Economy and Infrastructure

View from the south

The real division prevailing there in the Middle Ages was a specialty (in contrast to the inheritance law that is otherwise common in Thuringia ). During the GDR times, the property was transferred to LPGs . Today there is an agricultural cooperative under new law with only five employees. Due to its special climate, the place used to be a high altitude health resort. Worth mentioning at this point is the former Kurhaus "Sophienhöhe", which was razed, in this case blown up, as part of securing the inner-German border.

The L1123 runs through the village via Birx (approx. 2 km away) to Seiferts (approx. 5 km away) and Reichenhausen (approx. 7 km away). In Seiferts there is a connection to the B 278 ( Bischofsheim ad Rhön - Buttlar ), in Reichenhausen there is a connection to the B 285 ( Bad Salzungen - Mellrichstadt ). The L1125 also runs through the village, which connects Frankenheim with Hilders (approx. 5 km away) and Fladungen (approx. 6 km away).

The 2.9 km long barefoot panorama trail Frankenheim is the largest hiking trail of its kind in the new federal states.

Buildings

Neo-Gothic Evangelical Church

The Protestant church "St. Paul and Peter" is a simply furnished neo-Gothic building from 1885/86, which was built instead of a wooden church . The architect was the Weimar state master builder Karl Weise .

The Karolinenheim stands as the parish hall of the Protestant parish in the center of the village. It was built with the support of Karoline Luise von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach and thus received the name of the founder.

The rectory of the Frankenheim parish is located on Reichenhäuser Strasse, the main street in the upper part of the village coming from Reichenhausen, and has been in existence for over 100 years. Over the years it was left to decay, so that the current pastor of Frankenheim and Oberweid, Alfred Spekker, renovated and renovated the rectory with the support of the secular community. Today there is a memorial plaque in honor of Adolf Wuttig , who as a pastor stood up for the poor in the village as a "necessity of Frankenheim". The parish archive is located in the rectory, some of which goes back to the time after the Thirty Years' War .

The Hochrhönhalle , located on the right-hand side at the entrance to the village of Reichenhausen, is a multi-purpose hall with a well-equipped counter and appropriate seating options. It is used regularly both for events (see the mayor's website) and sporting activities, thanks to the appropriately marked ground. A stage and modern stage technology is available.
