The federal highway 278 (abbreviation: B 278 ) is a German federal highway in the Rhön in the triangle of Thuringia , Hesse and Bavaria . It begins in Buttlar in Thuringia and leads through the Ulster valley to Hesse, then through the Rote Moor on the watershed between Weser and Rhine to Bavaria, where it ends in Bischofsheim in the Rhön . It mainly serves local and tourist traffic and, due to its location away from the larger cities, has only a low traffic density. Due to its location on the former inner-German border , it is provided with several detonation shafts on the Hessian and Bavarian sides .

City gate in Tann, through which the B 278 leads

The B 278 begins on the B 84 , which continues in the direction of Eisenach , shortly after Buttlar and leads through the wide Ulster valley into the Rhön, past Geisa to Tann , where the B 278 passes through a historic city gate. The former inner-German border runs between these two cities, today the state border between Thuringia and Hesse. In the Hessian section, the B 458 branches off to Fulda (in Batten ) and the B 284 to Gersfeld (south of Wüstensachsen ). The former railway bridge on the Götzenhof – Wüstensachsen railway line , which crosses the road near Thaiden, is well worth seeing . Wüstensachsen is the only place on the B 278 to have a partial bypass. Here the road leaves the Ulster valley and leads up to the ridge of the Rhön with the Ottilienstein as the highest point ( 835  m above sea  level ) through the area of the Red Moors , behind which the Bavarian border is reached. From there it leads down into the Brend valley and ends at the Bischofsheim bypass road on the B 279 .
