The federal highway 261 (abbreviation: B 261 ) leads from the B 260 in Bad Ems to the B 49 near Eitelborn . With a length of 9.3 kilometers, it is one of the shortest federal highways in Germany.

course

Over a length of 9.3 km, the main road runs mainly in a north-south direction. It connects the east-west running B 49 with the B 260, which also runs in this direction. The B 261 thus connects the Westerwald and the eastern districts of Koblenz , such as Arenberg , and the Lahn Valley . This is why the B 261 in Bad Ems also bears the street name "Arenberger Straße". The road has two lanes.

particularities

It is noteworthy that the road between Arenberg and Neuhäusel begins above the other eastern districts of Koblenz at an altitude of about 300  meters and finally climbs about 220  meters in the direction of the Lahn valley. On the way downhill, the road layout deviates twice from the north-south direction, so that the height difference can be better managed via serpentine curves.

The B 261 also relieves the traffic within Koblenz , because vehicles coming from the Westerwald can drive directly into the Lahntal and not the detour through Koblenz and Lahnstein , namely via the B 42 , which also connects the B 49 and the B 260 with each other, need to use. The same applies to traffic from the eastern districts. Due to the short length as a connecting road between two other federal highways, there are no crossings or roads that join.

In Bad Ems , the B 261 forms a kind of ring before it meets the B 260 as an underground road at the Malbergtunnel on its western side . It runs within the city in a north-south direction at the same time on the parallel streets Oranienweg and Silberaustraße and in an east-west direction on the parallel streets Viktoriallee and Koblenzer Straße (= former B 260).

Worth seeing

In the direction of Bad Ems, at the level of Eitelborn, on the right-hand side at a height of 300 meters there is a golf course of the Middle Rhine Golf Club with golf hotel.
