The federal road 31a (abbreviation B 31a ) is a branch of the B 31 . The B 31a begins in two lanes on the Gottenheim - Bötzingen connection road (L 115) and then runs from the junction with the L116 between March and Umkirch as a four-lane motorway over the Freiburg-Mitte junction of the A 5 for almost eight kilometers in a west-east direction the city of Freiburg into it. Shortly before the end of the motor road, it turns into Bundesstraße 31 at the Schnewlin Bridge. The two lanes of the B 31a run partially separated from each other in the Freiburg district, where they enclose the river bed of the Dreisam .

The B 31a is part of the planned new route of the B 31 between Freiburg and Breisach . In the 1970s the section from the A 5 to Freiburg was initially built as the A 860 as a branch of the planned "Black Forest motorway" A 86 . However, this plan was rejected and the section was classified as federal highway 31a.

The extension from the A5 to Breisach to the local Rhine bridge into Alsace began in 2004. The first section from Umkirch industrial area to AS Freiburg Mitte (approx. 2.6 km) was opened to traffic on December 20, 2007, the section between Umkirch and Gottenheim (approx. 3.7 km) was opened on September 7, 2012 in operation.

The new section around Umkirch was initially signposted as the B 31 - without any additional information - because after the extension to Breisach has been completed, the B 31a will be renamed the B 31 and the old, southern B 31 will be downgraded to a state road. The planning of the further construction of the B 31-West between Gottenheim and Breisach was stopped by the Baden-Württemberg state government at the end of 2011 due to a lack of funding for the road. The completed section was then signposted as the B 31a.

When the Freiburg city tunnel of the B 31 is completed, the section between the March / Umkirch exit and Freiburg city center, according to new planning, will now be upgraded to a federal motorway, since a city tunnel planned as a motorway, in contrast to the motorized road, requires the construction of another full connection allowed in the city center.Template: future / in 5 years
